Excellent Cookbook for new or experienced cooks There is a good mix of recipes. If you prefer to cook from scratch, most of the recipes are from scratch. However, there are a number of recipes that call for canned soup, or processed cheese food, or other processed ingredients. There are many informational pages about food and pages where cooking skills are taught step - by-step.

A former coworker recommended Southern Living to me as a source of reliable, popular recipes, and this book seemed like a good place to start investigating. The recipes are certainly reliable classics, and true to the southern aesthetic, free of pretentiousness or fuss. I appreciated the nutritional information and recipes labeled as make-ahead or what. For the faint of heart, be aware that (a) these recipes often call for a lot of cheese, butter and/or salt and (b) other than biscuits and grits A former coworker recommended Southern Living to me as a source of reliable, popular recipes, and this book seemed like a good place to start investigating. I think most of these recipes look perfect for parties, Thanksgiving and other events where you'd be looking for a straightforward and reliable recipe.

This is my favorite cookbook. The reference section in the front of the book is extremely helpful, as are the mini reference sections sprinkled throughout the book (for example, the "how to season a cast-iron skillet" reference before the cornbread recipes and the apple guide amid the apple recipes.) The sections are thorough, well-organized, and beautifully illustrated. Recipes are approachable and have an easy reference guide above each recipe title: "make ahead," "entertainment," "freezes wel This is my favorite cookbook. This is one of my favorite cookbooks. The only complaint I have is there is not a picture for most recipes but it would be very difficult for there to be - toooo many recipes for that. I have tried numerous recipes and have enjoyed every one of them. Highly recommend!

I bought this for the basics, and it delivers over and over and over. Literally a primer on how to cook practically anything at all, plus an amazing reference. Hard-boiled eggs that aren't green. Waffles. Which cut of meat is which. Measurement equivalents. That kind of thing. Love this. I bought this for the basics, and it delivers over and over and over. Well-tested Well-researched. Always impresses my guests. A really good newlywed gift as it is a modern, southern, comprehensive cookbook. I even have forgotten ingredients and the recipe turned out just fine. Every recipe is a sure thing.
