I can’t decide whether to rate this two or three stars. However as multiple recipes needed much closer editing...I’m going with two. So first...the stories. There are 21 little stories about their journey into custom chocolate making. They are mainly just whimsical musings. None of them longer than two pages. They’re fine. Again, simple, whimsical, romanticized...whatever. Second...the recipes. I’ve tried 16 of them so far, Generally the cookie recipes were fine. Again, simple, whimsical, romanticized...whatever. Second...the recipes. I’ve tried 16 of them so far, Generally the cookie recipes were fine. Generally the pie recipes were fine. I had a 50% success rate with the cake recipes and candy recipes. (I didn’t try any drink recipes or savory recipes.) The Sarah Bernhardt recipe has to be missing like a third of its instructions. Then there were things like, pour into 8” round pan...but not mentioning that it also needs to be 8” high. Or...put into 12” pie plate...what? Who owns a TWELVE INCH pie plate...that’s huge. In the end, I started researching the same recipe online before attempting it out of this book. To me that’s some straight up horrible recipe editing. I was pleasantly surprised by the chocolate bread recipe. It came out amazingly. (Although, the instructions say to put dough into one pan and I wisely split it into two loaves...so still...bad editing.) These guys say they are all about perfecting everything in their craft...but if this book is any indicator...they’re really just about looking fancy. I mean, it is a very gorgeous looking book. I don’t think I would recommend this book for anything more than a lovely coffee table book. Or maybe finding a recipe in here that leads you to a better written recipe somewhere else. I’m still trying out more. I’m either really hopeful or a gluten for punishment. There are three recipes that I will make again, so I suppose I’m hopeful there’s a couple more worthwhile in there.

I finished this book in one day -- it's not an onerous read as there are really only a handful of entries and the rest is recipes... The entries written by each Mast brother delve into the spirit and history of their craft chocolate company, as well as their memories of building their family enterprise. It is poignant, personal and captivating. I haven't even tested a recipe yet, but I can just tell by the recipe ingredients and directions this is going to take some of my cooking and baking beyo I finished this book in one day -- it's not an onerous read as there are really only a handful of entries and the rest is recipes... They have done a wonderous job of elevating chocolate to its rightful place as a food and a food to be hand crafted by people for all the god like people in our lives...

Beyond inspiring, breathtaking, delicious, beautiful. What an incredible addition to my beloved cookbook and food book library. I am usually more interested in recipes than the writing in cookbooks, but this book had me hooked and I read it from cover to cover in one sitting, absorbing the story and fantasizing over the details of their epic journey. This is the first cookbook I have ever read from start to finish. It's a beautiful book and the Mast brothers' commitment to detail is evident throughout. The recipes are excellent, the photos are beautiful, and the stories inserted throughout are both entertaining and insightful. I have successfully made one recipe from this book so far and look forward to trying many more. This is the first cookbook I have ever read from start to finish. Read through all the narrative - definitely inspiring. As others have said, the photography is amazing. I've tried a handful of recipes so far: some worked great, others I'll have to try again. All in all the cookbook is a joy to flip through. Read through all the narrative - definitely inspiring. As others have said, the photography is amazing. These recipes are simply amazing. I have yet to try making something from it, but the recipes themselves, the articles in the book, the information about the Mast Brothers and how they go about doing what they do best - it's all quite fascinating. And don't even get me started on the images! These recipes are simply amazing. The owners of the company describe the adventures and struggles encountered as they created their business. Some of the included recipes sound very unusual and intriguing (e.g., Cacao Nib Scallops); others sound pretty similar to recipes I already have.

A great idea for a single subject cookbook that would've received 5 stars with some proofreading / recipe testing. A great idea for a single subject cookbook that would've received 5 stars with some proofreading / recipe testing.

Inspiring and gorgeous. It's a shame to have read this at New Year's resolution time. However, there's chocolate to be made into many beautiful desserts! Inspiring and gorgeous.
