Tolstoy as Teacher: Leo Tolstoy's Writings on Education

Availability: Ready to download

In the years before he wrote War and Peace, Leo Tolstoy founded and ran a school on his estate at Yasanya Polyana. Brimming with progressive and sometimes radical ideas on schooling, Tolstoy undertook to teach the peasant children many subjects-including imaginative writing-and wrote about what he learned. This is a book for anyone who cares about education.

I was hoping for more of a philosophical perspective by Tolstoy on education, but this is largely an account of the daily activities that took place at the school he created. While reading it many of his thoughts about the student work sounded familiar though, making me come to the realization that those like myself and Tolstoy, that prioritize artistic abilities over learning specific standards, may not be suited for traditional school teaching. Ever. And that's okay. So far I'm enjoying this book, much more than I thought I would. It's primarily comprised of Tolstoy's piece The School at Yasnaya Polyana with other, shorter essays included. I bought this book because I learned that my husband's great-grandfather was a teacher at this school and knew Tolstoy, so I thought it would be interesting to learn more about it. What's interesting is that now, during the lockdown when I am homeschooling my daughter, I am finding a lot of what Tolstoy relates to be helpf So far I'm enjoying this book, much more than I thought I would.
