The Swamp Monster Plot: Bloom gets a new job and she and “Brandon” clash over her meeting new people. Techna and Timmy also awkwardly clash over the thought of the bar’s clientele. Meanwhile, “Skye” and Stella are taking a walk around the lake. “Skye” is teasing Stella about joining the Winx Club when she spots an old boat. Techna and Timmy also awkwardly clash over the thought of the bar’s clientele. Meanwhile, “Skye” and Stella are taking a walk around the lake. “Skye” is teasing Stella about joining the Winx Club when she spots an old boat. There are initials in the boat and Stella thinks it’s romantic. But when “Skye” asks if he should carve their initials she says no (because the boat is exclusive to the couple). “Skye” offers to fix the boat and Stella is impressed by this (as he’s a Prince). “Skye,” tells her he’s going to look for the owner of the boat. Then we get a flashback of the couple (Muriel and Giwin) and how Giwin went away to school and promised to come back to Muriel. Then carved the initials in the boat (where they meet) before he left. “Skye” buys the boat as a gift to Stella. The next day, the boys at Redwood Fountain get a lesson on nightmares and an assignment in the Black mud Swamp. The Witches just so happen to be in the swamp picking herbs for potions (and arguing) when they hear the Specialist. They decide since they only seem to have eyes for the Alfea girls to take their attention for themselves. Icy fakes like she has a broken ankle and the guys flock to her. Darcy and Stormy get jealous and argue (again). Darcie and Riven have an interesting conversation about potions not being able to cure everything and that there are some pains they can’t fix. The guys run into some bones of a (dinosaur?) and deduce something from another dimension devoured it and decide to investigate. Riven stays behind with the Witches. The Alfea girls are also at the Swamp and they spot the boys and vice versa. They try to warn the girls that they’re walking right into the Swamp monster’s location but it’s too late. As the Winx and the RF guys fight the monster, the Witches get jealous and decide to create a storm making it even more difficult to defeat the monster. Only they’ll use Riven’s energy. As they drain him, Darcie pleads for them to stop before they kill him. The others rescue Timmy from the monster’s attacks while Icy calls Stormy off (and goes off on her showing she has feelings for Riven). The Witches leave but Darcie stays to help Riven. The guys take Timmy back to the school because he’s injured badly and to get help. Musa discovers that lightning struck in a certain area. “Brandon” stays behind and he and Bloom make up while they make shelter. The RF instruction congratulates the guys on their mission. Later that night the Bloom and Techna rave over how brave their guys were. They ask Musa if she saw Riven but her mind is on another guy that gave her a lucky white pebble. My Thoughts: I love how these comics give alternate plots to the ones we saw in the cartoons! I think that’s VERY clever! This one was even a little more interesting than the episode about the Swamp. What doesn’t make sense is aren’t there other Red Fountain guys other than Skye (Brandon) Brandon (Sky) Timmy and Riven. Why would the Witches even need to stoop to trickery to get an RF guy’s attention? Icy, Darcie, and Stormy aren’t exactly ugly. And if the RF guys are too “noble” to see that or want them because they're witches then the RF guys all SUCK. Yeah, so they’re “Dark”. I refuse to believe that in this school (unless this school is just made up of 4 guys) Riven is the only one that has an edge. Then I like Riven better with Darcie than Musa. And is that Flora’s guy that Musa is daydreaming about? I did like seeing that side of Darcie because I understood fully what it’s like being a witch where love and relationships are concerned and not always being understood or accepted for who you are. I really hope Riven and Darcie becomes a thing in this comic. But overall I have to say my favorite guy in this is Skye (Brandon) for what he did for Stella. Rating: 8

But this is a nice in-universe explanation. This story has less of a focus on the Winx, and more on the Specialists and the Trix. We get to see the specialists training to become heroes, and it includes the involvement of magic. This is different to the show where they are mostly shown to be fighters. It also shows the Trix aiming to get the Specialists on their side, reinforcing that witches don’t hate everyone else – but mainly fairies and the Trix’s own anger towards Stella and Bloom. It also introduces the Darcy and Riven connection that is explored in the show. This shows Darcy as more humane, possibly actually having some feelings towards him at first. We also see Musa watching them both and getting upset. At this stage, Riven hasn’t really show interest in either of them so I was annoyed that Musa was upset. At the end it’s even left on a bit of cliff-hanger that she’ll hear from another guy she’s met. Carrying on with the relationships in this comic, we see more of Brandon and Bloom. In the comics they’re more antagonistic towards one another, often arguing and so just reading the comics you’d think they’re terrible for each other. In the show Musa and Riven have this argumentative behaviour, but with them not fully knowing each yet in the comics it feels like Bloom has been given that dynamic.

Seeing all these new interactions is just *CHEF'S KISS* Plus seeing the big bad Trix playing the damsell in distress was such an experience. One I never wanna see again, but I won't deny it was funny as hell. It's all the mundane details what really makes the comics so far, things that we didn't get to see in the show that fill up some gaps left by it. (Probably some of it appears on later seasons but I'd rather die than watching 'em. What can you do.)
