A warm helping of nostalgia, in color as I first experienced it. Other than the tedious Christmas issue with Mikey which interrupts a massive cliffhanger, this is excellent. Onto volume 2.

I remember playing the arcade Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles at a birthday party in the first grade, beating the boss of the first level, and feeling like an unstoppable sai-wielding turtle-boss. So, obviously, the Ninja Turtles were part of my childhood. I watched the cartoons, I bought the t-shirts, I played the video-games...but I never read the comics. In fact, if you asked me, I probably couldn't have even told you that there were comics or that this franchise had started out in comics. Years I remember playing the arcade Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles at a birthday party in the first grade, beating the boss of the first level, and feeling like an unstoppable sai-wielding turtle-boss. So, obviously, the Ninja Turtles were part of my childhood. I watched the cartoons, I bought the t-shirts, I played the video-games...but I never read the comics. In fact, if you asked me, I probably couldn't have even told you that there were comics or that this franchise had started out in comics. Years later I'm browsing the stands of graphic novels at my local comic book shop and I see this book and realize that a major cultural milestone had been founded in my all-time favorite media, and, well, I had to buy it. This collection was wonderful, from start to finish, and while the entertainment of the turtles and their adventures was the main joy of this book, the fun for me as a reader was discovering the original character of the series. The Ninja Turtles weren't the fun-loving scamps that populated so much media when I was a kid, they inhabited a dark world full of revenge, crime, insanity, blood-lust, and murder. The Turtles would actually stab people with their swords and sais and this was a chance to reassess my love for the franchise, or, really, to refocus my attention on the parts that matter. Obvious multi-media artistic endeavors are going to have their differences, but the fun part of this book was realizing that the stories that I thought I knew were drastically different. This was a fun read, and I would recommend this book to any lover of comics.

Wanted to read the original Eastman-Laird Turtles books. I read the first 11 issues of the original title with the recolored pages. Never had read these before. They are really, really good. And the artwork was much better than I thought it would be.

Note: I read the entire volume of this which is 300-sh pages, but couldn't find that edition. Note: I read the entire volume of this which is 300-sh pages, but couldn't find that edition.

Initial story remains amazing, though sadly loses track with turtles in space and dimension hopping...

Gritty start to the ninja turtles

Pretty good - a bit draggy at the beginning, then about halfway through it picks up and gets interesting.
