I'm finding that I'm faulting the book for what it has to be: a high level summary. It definitely connected a few dots, historically, but as a Catechumin in Eastern Orthodoxy, I was a little disappointed with the focus on the western church. The author all but acknowledges that he knows very little about the Eastern Church, but what little he says, then, ABOUT Eastern Orthodoxy feels highly suspect and inaccurate. His deliberate avoidance speaks volumes: an acknowledgement that he doesn't focus I'm finding that I'm faulting the book for what it has to be: a high level summary. I tend to dislike books where the author tries to direct me to a specific conclusion. Allow me the freedom to think. Do not inform me of your impressions or the causation of a systemic breakdown. I enjoy drawing my own conclusions and coming up with a basis for such ideas. I may agree, but permit me the pleasure of doing so independent of the authors biases being woven into the narrative.

If you like Christian history (i.e. the history of the Church), or if you want a well-rounded but non-tedious account at just over 200 pages, try this one.

As I am not a fan of history, this read was for a class I was taking. It is very informatiomal, so much so, that at times it felt overwhelming. I did appreciate the marginal subheadings, it made going back through the book much easier.
