A cookbook for "the very young" is where the description is wrong. While it includes great things like how to set a table and good manners, as well as simple recipes like cheese toast, fruit kebabs, and Ants on a Log, it also has more complex recipes like pancakes, chicken pot pie, and fried doughnuts. Of course there is a warning in the first section "Safety First". I'd recommend this book for kids between 6-14, though it is written for a younger reader. This is such a cute cookbook for the preschool to 1st grade crowd. It's got pictures for every ingredient and item needed while the recipes are clear and easy to understand. It's a wonderful tool for teaching little children how to cook and get started in the kitchen with the help of an adult. This is such a cute cookbook for the preschool to 1st grade crowd. Very cute! May daughter and I made a couple of the recipes in this book. The first section of the book shows kids how to properly set a table, and there's a section on table manners, too. Very cute! Paula Deen's joyful, energetic approach to cooking is the perfect attitude to bring to a children's cookbook. The book starts off with safety tips and basic definitions of various cooking terms like sifting and sautéeing, and then gives clear, illustrated instructions for making a variety of foods for each meal. The recipes range from the familiar and easy (Ants on a Log) to more complicated, creative recipes like rice-filled meatballs that cook up to resemble porcupines. The recipes range from the familiar and easy (Ants on a Log) to more complicated, creative recipes like rice-filled meatballs that cook up to resemble porcupines. The book puts the child at the center of the cooking experience, with an "adult helper" who is just there to handle sharp knives and hot pans. Ingredient lists have pictures of all the supplies and tools needed to make each dish, and extra pages are filled with Deen's memories of cooking as a child and with her own children. A great book for getting kids started with cooking. Recommended for ages 5-12. Tags: cookbook, nonfiction, Paula Deen, celebrity chef, recipes, safety, independent cooking, memoir, ages 5-12

The kids have had a good time making recipes with us and with sitters from this book. It's Paula Deen, so it's not exactly low-fat, but none of the recipes are totally outrageous, either. They haven't liked everything they've made, but they have liked the process and the way she illustrates the ingredients and points out which steps are for kids and which ones need adult supervision. And then they cook in their pretend kitchen for a while, which I enjoy ;-) When this goes back to the ibrary, I m The kids have had a good time making recipes with us and with sitters from this book. This book is a great book for kids of all ages. The book shows pictures of what you need so even kids that are not able to read words can read the pictures. This is a good introduction to reading non-fiction as it has table of contents, glossary, a safety first section, and an index. It even gives some recipes for making things that children wouldn't eat like bubbles and play clay. All of the different elements of this book make it a great book for children. Simple, but tasty recipes that kids really can follow, for the most part, on their own. Illustrations make it easy to identify ingredients, and there are chapters on manners, table-setting and safety. My 5.5 year old's favorite book at the moment (she consults it multiple times a day), and is light enough for her to carry around; in addition the book is spiral-bound to make page-turning easier. For a first cookbook for kids, I think this is great. The illustrations are darling, there isn't anything that a photo would depict better. The recipes look yummy, we will be trying a few out real soon. The instructions are clear and the chapters each have a lot of recipes to choose from. Well done. No pun intended. :) For a first cookbook for kids, I think this is great. The illustrations are darling, there isn't anything that a photo would depict better. My daughter got this for Christmas, along with her own rolling pin and apron, from her Grammy. It's such a thorough, well illustrated, simple, and fun book. There's even recipes for crafts like Bubbles and Salt Dough. The family pics of the Deen's are fun to look at too. We just have really enjoyed it. Way too complicated for a 'first cookbook'. Also, the illustrations were horrible--very misleading. (ie vanilla cupcakes that looked dark brown, huh?) And... why include such unhealthy items like doughnuts? To her credit, there are some great healthy recipes, but felt that most of the recipes were too advanced for a little one! I bought this for my niece's 7th birthday, so that we could cook together. The recipes are ridiculously too simple. My 7 year old niece was already way past this level. Much too boring and quick. My daughter picked this out at the library and she read through every recipe! Good stuff- not real simple, but definitely things that kids can make with mom or dad. I like the way it's illustrated, even though there isn't pictures of the actual food. My daughter picked this out at the library and she read through every recipe!
