Buffalo are Coming

Captain Dusty Fog and the Ysabel Kid had heard some shaggy tales before, but this one took the prize. Some fancy Easterners were determined to save the noble buffalo from the Indians. To do it they wanted Dusty and his Texans to make a trail drive to a safe range--a trail drive of bison. The only trouble was, Dusty and his comrades hadn't heard the half of it. The Easterner Captain Dusty Fog and the Ysabel Kid had heard some shaggy tales before, but this one took the prize. Some fancy Easterners were determined to save the noble buffalo from the Indians. To do it they wanted Dusty and his Texans to make a trail drive to a safe range--a trail drive of bison. The only trouble was, Dusty and his comrades hadn't heard the half of it. The Easterners had a secret scheme up their sleeve, and it didn't have anything to do with saving buffalo. Now the Texans were heading off into a storm of dust, trouble, and blood that would begin with an ambush and end up in a town called Hell. And before it was over, the Texans would do the one thing they were sure would fix the situation: pick up their guns and fight!

Once again the Dell description for this book is waaaaaay off. It is Stone Hart and the Wedge who actually drive the buffalo, though Dusty and the Ysabel Kid were consulted at the beginning and then nearly assassinated as a result. Like many of the books written later, it is weaker and a bit disjointed in the plot. A group of easterners want someone to drive a heard of buffalo for them. They claim they are trying to 'save' the buffalo from extinction but their motives are much more sinister (tho Once again the Dell description for this book is waaaaaay off. They claim they are trying to 'save' the buffalo from extinction but their motives are much more sinister (though even at the end of the story I'm not entirely sure what the full purpose was). The story opens with the floating outfit making a visit to Mulrooney, switches to the Wedge and a group of easterners driving the buffalo--though little detail about the drive is actually given--and then ends with the floating outfit swooping in to save the day once again in the town of Hell in the Palo Duro country. There is a brief appearance by Annie Singing Bear and a reference to her story which is told in Is-A-Man or as it was republished Texas Warrior.

2.5 stars - there's a decent story to be told here, but Edson mostly uses it as an opinion piece. There's not a lot of the Floating Outfit in this book. A separate crew are hired to ride herd on some buffalo, they meet Dusty Fog and his crew at the start of the book and that's about it until near the end. This seems to be more of a book where Edson is getting his feelings about Eastern liberals off his chest. Apparently they were to blame for all the problems going on (plus revising history, and the downfall of Western movies/literature). Plenty of footnotes, mostly advertising his other books, rather than explaining anything.
