This isn't a review of the story collection, just a brief note to explain why I didn't finish it. Because the book was a gift from my friend Andrew Seddon, who has a story included, I treated it as a review copy, and gave it an honest good-faith effort; I read eight of the 26 stories. But out of these, only two actually worked for me --and one of those had a glaring logical hole in the plotting. That's not a very high proportion of successful stories, and several sessions of reading convinced me it wasn't going to improve. IMO, the anthology was well-intended, and the stories were meant to convey good messages; but the messages were lost, obscured, or undercut by flawed conceptions and execution. (Also, I'm not a big fan of surrealism or self-conscious attempts to be pretentiously "literary," which were often in evidence here.) I had come to the point of viewing reading the book as an unpleasant chore; and when that becomes the case, it's time to bite the bullet and not throw any more time down the rat hole, because an unpleasant chore is something reading shouldn't be.

Any anthology of stories will contain certain selections that resonate more with some readers than others, but the majority of stories in this collection are certain to leave the reader with an awakened awareness of some true-life evils that are typically hidden in the darkest shadows of our culture. Admittedly, I am not a typical fan of dark fiction, but I was intrigued by what might be meant be "socially conscious dark fiction". I found, as I was reading many of these stories, a sense of horror Any anthology of stories will contain certain selections that resonate more with some readers than others, but the majority of stories in this collection are certain to leave the reader with an awakened awareness of some true-life evils that are typically hidden in the darkest shadows of our culture. Admittedly, I am not a typical fan of dark fiction, but I was intrigued by what might be meant be "socially conscious dark fiction". I found, as I was reading many of these stories, a sense of horror and disgust arising (something I am not typically accustomed to with my standard literary diet), and there were times I had to put the book down to digest this new fare. As I thought about what I had read, I came to the realization that this is a great medium for helping the reader to have a visceral reaction to real-life horrors that we often turn a blind eye to. I SHOULD should be supremely disgusted by human trafficking, the epidemic of eating disorders, and the exploitation of impoverished people (among the many other issues highlighted by this book). I found the selection in Silent Screams to be a well-crafted anthology of stories that are designed to make readers think deeply about the world they live in. Although many of the selections are dark and horror-inducing, there are a few delightful pieces that make good use of humor and levity as well. I highly recommend this book for both those who love dark and speculative fiction, as well as those who, like me, want to add a little variety to their bookshelf.
