Guns N' Roses was named "The most dangerous band in the world". They were Axl Rose, Slash, Duff, Izzy, and Steven, 5 bad boys from Hollywood. Axl and Izzy were high school buddies in Indiana, whereas Slash and Steven played bike and skateboard together.  They used to play small gigs in many clubs in LA: Troubadour, Whisky A Go-Go, Roxy, and the likes, they became crowds' favorite.  Paul Stanley of Kiss was interested to produce their album, but the guys declined. Nikki Sixx of Motley Crue was offered to give some commercial touch, but he was so high on drugs, he was f*cked up, then turned it down, even though later GNR and Motley toured together.  The book was focused on Axl. I don't mind, I've read Slash & Duff's memoir.  During Appetite for Destruction & Live?! Like A Suicide, they guys were solid and stable. After huge success, some people said Axl started to behave like a superstar. He often came late to the concert, made the crowd angry and caused riots.  Axl had a complex personality. He was raised in a broken-home family, was sexually and physically abused. He'd been diagnosed manic depressive, then found solace through spiritual teachings. According to the book, Axl brought his own entourage during world tour, including spiritual teachers. One by one, the original gunners left, either fired or quit. Tommy Lee once said that Axl had an LSD (Lead Singer Disease).  Axl's antics caught people's attentions, even more interesting than GNR's music itself. The infamous "Chinese Democracy", the full length album after Use Your Illusion, also brought people's attention. Even Moby said the album would never happen. Perhaps, it has set a new record as the longest album in development as well as the most expensive, due to it taking so long to come out, giving Geffen a massive headache. If you want to know more about Guns N' Roses, you should read this book. Not as good as Duff's "It's So Easy (And Other Lies)" or Motley Crue's "The Dirt", but it's an OK reading to learn about GNR's brief history.

Urgh. Don't even bother. Poorly written, weirdly arranged, and full of spelling errors. Even the photos are crappy. Urgh. Don't even bother. Poorly written, weirdly arranged, and full of spelling errors. Even the photos are crappy.

So, published in 2004 (that is, when Axl rose was still working on the 'Chinese Democracy' album) this is supposed to be a biography of the Guns... Well, it failed! In fact, what we've got here is more a biography of the band through Axl Rose only than a proper band history! Now, sure, the approach might make sense since Axl is the only original member left! Now, sure, the approach might make sense since Axl is the only original member left! But, if you dislike the guy it's going to be a problem... Of course, all the major steps of the Guns N' Roses' career are here (from their formation to the touring with Aerosmith and Metallica), the whole illustrated by crazy stories that truly demonstrates if needed be how 'sex, drugs and rock n' roll' they were. BUT, Paul Stenning has such an admiration for the singer that, he not only screwed his own book by quickly turning it into an 'all about Axl' type of tale, he also dares using bad pop psychology to justify the diva's ridiculous attitude (e.g. delving into his childhood, analysing -badly- his lyrics etc.)! This is more than annoying; it's ridiculous. More, the fact it drags endlessly with pages as useless as they are boring (listing of chronicles and concerts etc.) makes for a disappointing read. I don't want to rate it too harsh though. I like the Guns N' Roses, so a read about them is always pleasant to go through. But, again, if you're not a huge fan nor an admirer of Axl Rose then forget. I sure did.

Guns N' Roses!

A good history of G'N'R's rise, but very Axl-focused, and totally glosses over the "break up" of Guns. The author has the annoying habit of jumping around chronologically, so I kept waiting for a chapter about Slash's departure and it never came, it just jumps from the end of the Use Your Illusion tour in 92/93 to "where are they now" with surprisingly little information or even conjecture about what actually happened (which was the whole reason I wanted to read this book). Axl - intense energy! Couldn't you manage to leave that pain in the past? Anyway, anger makes you sexy... but lonely... She's got eyes of the bluest skies As if they thought of rain I hate to look into those eyes And see an ounce of pain Her hair reminds me of a warm safe place Where as a child I'd hide And pray for the thunder And the rain To quietly pass me by Axl - intense energy!
