This is a slightly disappointing book - as a quick reference guide it works ok, but when reading it in one go, it lacks...something! It is supposed to be a reference guide for the fantasy writer, but a lot of it is firmly rooted in our world. For a writer of suedo-medieval fantasy, I can see that it is helpful, but the sort of stuff I like to read doesn't really get covered. Still, as a history book, it was quite interesting and I did learn some stuff about castles and armour that I hadn't known This is a slightly disappointing book - as a quick reference guide it works ok, but when reading it in one go, it lacks...something! For a writer of suedo-medieval fantasy, I can see that it is helpful, but the sort of stuff I like to read doesn't really get covered. Still, as a history book, it was quite interesting and I did learn some stuff about castles and armour that I hadn't known before. The chapters on mythical creatures and races, which I thought I would enjoy the most, didn't really cover anything new, although the one on magic is quite a good springboard for reading more. Overall, a book I will probably keep just to check facts, but not one I will read as a whole entity again.
