(view spoiler)[Mason & Coop (the bar owner & heroine's boss) were childhood friends with a girl called Caroline. They all grew up together & both boys fell in love with the same girl. When Mason was 15, he & Caroline hooked up but briefly separated when he went to college. Both boys were in love with her but this Caroline chick was a floozy. She hooked up with Coop while Mason was in college & when Mason came home, she dropped Coop & married Mason three months later. A few yrs later, she goes back to Coop (while still married to Mason) and as they run off together, someone shoots her in a robbery attempt and she died. Ever since then, both Mason & Coop have been heartbroken and now they are semi-enemies. Enter the heroine, Libby. She is running away from a psycho ex boyfriend who had been abusive & even cut her up. When she moves to town to get away from the past, she meets Mason who is her next door neighbor and Coop who becomes her boss. What I didn't like is that both men are now pursuing her (like they did with the OW, Caroline) so it felt like history is repeating itself - even though heroine states that she is attracted to Mason & doesn't want a relationship with Coop, she still thinks Coop is hot and if she wasn't so "messed up", she might have given it a chance. That right there ruined it for me because it felt like she was just as fickle as the ex. Then there is the 2 males in this story. I get Coop & Mason were in love with the same woman (and it was said that many of the town folks believed that Coop & Caroline were meant to be) but WHY didn't both of these two intelligent men see what a fickle piece of shit this Caroline was and drop her? They were both been played at by this chick since they were kids and that is where I lost respect for Hero because he still grieved for that piece of -you-know-what! It was revealed that Mason's wife would leave him for Coop on & off through out their marriage. Why didn't he ever kick her to the curb? His lame explanation is: "Because ultimately, it was hard not to love Caroline”. “Don’t get me wrong, I’m not looking for a way to justify the things that she did, but rather to clarify the way that she thought. She explained it to me once. You see, when you’re told that you can’t have something, you want it all the more. Caroline got told that a lot and it made her go after things in life with reckless abandon. If she wanted something, she wouldn’t stop until she got it.” “When she was with me, she wanted to be with him and when she was with him—“ “She wanted you,” I finished for him. “Yeah. Yeah, that about sums it up. I guess what it boiled down to was that she wanted us both, but she knew that neither one of us was the type to share and she hated that she had to choose.” “And on the night that she was killed, she and Coop were together?” “Yeah. They were together. My relationship with Caroline had always been volatile. I mean, I loved her, but we always seemed to rub each other the wrong way. We argued a lot. “You must be wondering why in God’s name I kept taking her back.” “Not really,” I replied. “Because when we love someone, we tend to overlook their flaws and forgive the things they do.” I won't quote any more because really, he has no explanation other then the fact that he "loved" her & would always take her back no matter what! (hide spoiler)] And THIS is why I hate this stupid writing and DNF'd at 35% or so........

I had to give it to her, she had balls. She met his glare with an even more impressive one of her own. “I’m the best waitress you got!” She shouted. Coop snorted. “If you believe that, you’re deluded as well as stupid.” “You’ll never replace me,” she went on. “Who else would work so hard for you in this dumbfuck town?” I would! Come on, Duke.” I turned to see Libby scratching him gently behind the ears. Duke looked like he was in doggy heaven and I knew I had no chance of him coming with me now. I sighed and walked out of the house, leaving my traitorous dog behind. He didn’t even look up as I left. I just wanted to check if Duke was here before I sent out a search party. It’s too hot for him to be out on the mountain. When a half-hearted bark sounded from behind the couch, Libby’s cheeks filled with color. “Yeah, he’s here. I hope you don’t mind. I’m not enticing him here with treats or anything,” she said. “But he seems to keep coming back anyway. If it’s a problem, then maybe—“ “No, no problem. Not that I wouldn’t like to see my own damn dog now again,” I said loudly looking towards the couch as if he could understand what I was saying. I headed to the couch and peered over the back of it to see my traitorous dog sprawled out on a blanket. He lifted his head to look at me then promptly went back to sleep. I shook my head in disgust as I took a seat on the couch.

Speaking of vibes, I just wasn’t very sold on them as a couple in the first place. I honestly think that it’s because the book is less than 150 pages and there’s so much packed in. There are moments of grief, fallen friendships, romance, and even some suspense. A lot to tackle with so few pages. I saw that there are nine books in this series, so they might get better. I do plan on reading the next one, it just isn’t high on my tbr at the moment. Blog | Instagram

An amazing heart wrenching story that is very emotional and touches on the sensitive issue of domestic abuse. The book is well written and realistic; and the ideas are well-thought out. The plot is consistent, realistic, and engaging; there is a great pace from scene to scene. The characters are broken; however they show strength and true depth. Their chemistry is off the charts and together they are able to deal with the ups and downs and came out stronger because of it. A story about two people trying to live their lives the best they can after certain things have happened to them. I enjoyed getting to know the characters and totally fell for Duke! For me I would have personally liked a bit more story development as I had questions that weren't answered enough for me, and I thought some characters could have been utilised further. I'd be interested in reading more stories about the other characters who appeared in this book. The first book in a new series and I know I want to read the next book. Great love story that includes a dog who comes to the rescue, so in my book that just sends it over the top :). The author presented a well written storyline with a slew of well developed and engaging characters that came in all shapes and sizes.
