A good biography of Clive, but tells more than you might want to know about his genitals and his sex life. One whole chapter about his circumcision! Does not say enough about his crimes against the Indian people. But you can connect the dots yourself, because ten million Indian people died of starvation shortly after his departure. Ten million people! By the way, the British raised taxes in India during the famine, and Clive became the wealthiest citizen in Britain. Ten million people! By the way, the British raised taxes in India during the famine, and Clive became the wealthiest citizen in Britain. Put those facts together and you will get an idea of what sort of a man was Robert Clive. This book extends into a history of eighteenth century English morality, hypocrisy, and corruption. The language is antiquated at times, especially in quotations, but on the whole, readable. Well researched, from primary sources.

Sadly this book is a hoax. Nearly all the direct quotations in it are fabricated, as well as the citations pointing to nonexistent archives. It is on the more elaborate side and the author must have been pleased with himself. See Ronald Hyam, Empire and Sexuality: The British Experience, 51n22.
