If I read a book that I will re-read, I save my pennies and eventually buy it. As this is a box set, I will review each book separately, then the box set. SPECIAL CIRCUMSTANCES On the last day of Michael Daley's partnership with the largest law firm in San Francisco, two bodies are discovered. Anyone could be a suspect as it was New Years Eve Day and it had been announced just the night before no one was getting a year end bonus. Everyone was decidedly upset. Daley was leaving because after resigning from the public defenders office, the firm thought (apparently as did he) he could bring in major white collar defendants with lots of money. Didn't happen, as Daley, a former priest, was not that kind of lawyer. He preferred those who were being railroaded. Daley takes his last possession remaining in that firm and heads over to his new office, which he is leasing from his ex-wife. A suspect is identified and arrested at the home of his parents. Also present were the suspect's wife and children. And Mike Daley. The District Attorney is very new at his job. Prior to becoming the DA, he worked (or didn't work, depending on where your sympathies lie) at the same law firm as the victims and Mike. He had never litigated a criminal trial. Therefore, he had to depend on the skills of real top prosecutor in the office, the man he defeated in the election. Sounds cozy, right? The suspect's father is a very highly respected rabbi with a large congregation. The meal the were having was just before sundown on Friday. The trial is riveting. A potential witness may be dead. Partners of the firm toe the party line. It appears that Mike may have made a tremendous mistake. This is courtroom drama at its finest. After explosive evidence is presented, Mike is doubting himself. What is the final verdict? Will Mike's trial strategy save his client or subject him to the death penalty? Read this book. It's amazing. INCRIMINATING EVIDENCE One of Daley's ex-partners is arrested for the murder of a gay hooker. Despite the acrimonious parting of Daley and that firm, he agrees to take the case. The new client tries to bring in help and in return, Daley doubles his retainer. Way to go, Mike! Unfortunately, the new client's daughter is also a lawyer. She makes life very difficult for Mike, his ex-wife and partner in law, Rosie. Mike and Rosie get along much better divorced than married. Much better. The client insists that Mike use an nemesis of his for what is called Keegan counsel in California. This is the attorney who argues during the penalty phase in mitigation against the death penalty. Yep, the DA cheerfully makes this case a "special circumstances" case meaning the client will be tried for the death penalty. As usual, Mike's client opts for speedy trial. Again as usual, the prosecutor objects. The judge treats them to a trial date in two weeks. Also as usual, Daley puts witnesses on his list given to the prosecution and the court that he has no intention of calling. The prosecutor does the same. Standard procedure. One thing I particularly love (so far) is at the beginning of each paragraph, we get a glimpse of the publicity each case is receiving. Either radio, newspapers, or even CNN. Very interesting part of the story. I do find these trials interesting. As Daley is a criminal defense attorney, I will assume the rest of the series will follow-up the outline set by the first two books. There is one concern I have for this particular book. One thing the medical examiner stated as fact just could not be true. It sounds good, but couldn't have happened as the medical examiner said it did. Perhaps it won't be caught by other readers, and to say what it is would be a spoiler. I say this only to point out I am disappointed. Ah. One of Daley's witnesses points out my objection. He rehabilitates my trust in the author. I must say never in a million years did I see the ending coming. Yes, I literally cried. Books like this one come along once in a blue moon. Lightning only strikes once. The second is incorrect. This is yet another amazing book. I am feeling so privileged to be able to read it. I am very much looking forward to the next one. CRIMINAL INTENT Rosie and Mike have a new office, not the smelly ex-martial arts place they once inhabited. The corner Chinese food place (which was not on a corner) went with their old office. Torn down in the name of progress. Is a snort appropriate in a review? We are learning a lot about the third leading character in the series that

I love this series. I was pretty sure as I read the first 2 books that I'd read them already, at some point in the past - but that didn't stop me from reading again. I already knew I'd read the third book. The problem with reading straight through 4 books is I realize how much the author repeats the same things in each book. That said, I think Nick the Dick is one of the most colorful fictional characters I've seen in a long time, and I'm delighted every time he shows up. If the author ever lets I love this series. I was pretty sure as I read the first 2 books that I'd read them already, at some point in the past - but that didn't stop me from reading again. I already knew I'd read the third book. The problem with reading straight through 4 books is I realize how much the author repeats the same things in each book. Special Circumstances An enjoyable legal thriller. It's one of those where you just need to enjoy the ride. A whodunnit with a a lot of nice twists. Not really believable and characters that are way OTT but still it keeps your interest and you really do want to find out whodunnit. I know that a lot of movies follow this format but this was pretty blatant. Maybe a touch more subtlety required. Minor quibble. Incriminating Evidence So this is basically a re-hash of Special Circumstances with a few change of characters. Once again it is very readable but I could not imagine that the DA that is in court for murder would have hired Mike Daley and with his personality he would have been telling him what to do rather than just asking him questions as he is also a lawyer. Like Special Circumstances I was even less convinced with the killer in this one. These are not boring in the slightest and whip along at quite a pace. Criminal Intent Like an Agatha Christie novel. A famous movie director is murdered and everyone in the room appears to have a motive for killing. Mike Daley as Poirot attempts to solve the case to get his client, who has been arrested, off the hook. A story that fairly whips along like the previous two. Final Verdict Leon Walker was accused of killing a convenience store clerk 10 years ago in a botched armed robbery. No Leon has been charged with first degree murder again. This time it is a venture capitalist called Tower Grayson. Mike and Rosie to the rescue...

They stopped counting and reporting the suicides by jumping off the bridge when it was getting close to 1000 back in the 1980's. References to the district sttorney, mayor, and on-air television and radio announcers are fictional. And the senators and representatives are also fictional. You know they will, but it's not even about how they get there that kept me turning pages. Mike investigates, interviews, talks to judges and other lawyers, and interrogates witnesses on the stand. Through it all you get his almost continuous mental asides regarding the statements or actions of others. Mike's thoughts make the book. I can't remember enjoying a legal thriller this much. Through it all you get his almost continuous mental asides regarding the statements or actions of others. Can't say hilarious, that's overused anyway. It's the way the author reveals Mike's insights and attitudes, kind of like the color commentary on a sports broadcast. Its really funny also. It reveals Mike's. Inner sarcasm that must remain inside since every word he says must be measured, especially at trial. I read all four volumes straight through. Now I have to go back to Amazon and find out if this is all or do we get more.

It seems like he's also a pretty decent lawyer. The author drips out the evidence in the stories in a methodical way that sometimes makes you want to scream, but it is incredibly effective. I would have happily given this collection 5 stars if there hadn't been so many grammatical errors, particularly Outstanding I haven't spent 1400 pages with any characters since Jamie and Claire Fraser. So glad I read this series! When I find a new author that I really like, I like to read several of his books in a row. This three story set was just perfect! I liked how the stories flowed,the characters were interesting,the storylines captivating. I was late to work a few times because I stayed awake too late reading and was reading instead of exercising in the a.m. Nice,clean read without excessive swearing and drama. Cudos, Mr. Siegel!

Great series start I love this series, very well done and put together and the books flow within each other and between each other as well. Fully understand that people might pick up a book out of order but the constant explanation of the backstories of recurring characters. Otherwise really well done and the stories are becoming harder to solve.

I my be a softie for the under dog regardless of the circumstances (some exceptions) but I have to admit that the last couple of chapters of Final Verdict had me in tears. Good legal drama I have to give it to Sheldon Swivel I usually have the plot figured out by the halfway mark but I just am unable?e to do it with his books. Perhaps it is because there are so many characters. Perhaps He is better than I am at legal book plots. Enjoyed the first four immensely. Will read more.

Lawyer with a heart and a sense of humour. Enjoyable read with lots of twists. A lawyer who seeks true justice and does what is necessary to find out the truth. My review I like the suspense I feel while reading that the client is going to jail and then at the last minute something occurs to get the client off even if they are guilty .
