When I watched the Dragon Prince cast narrated the first few pages of this graphic novel at a Comic Con panel, I knew I had to read this. It does not disappoint. The artwork is really good, the story is as magical as ever. Phoe Phoe is adorable. I wished my fave character made an appearance but she did not. It being too short is my main and only criticism. Now I'll need those next four seasons, please. When I watched the Dragon Prince cast narrated the first few pages of this graphic novel at a Comic Con panel, I knew I had to read this. SPOILER-FREE REVIEW: I'm so happy and relieved that this was a genuinely good read. It felt like cheating to be allowed to read it before the fourth season comes out, because reading it felt like watching an episode of the show. Everyone's just so in-character and I love Ezran's silly little jokes and how kind and sweet everyone is to each other. I love the magic and the artistry put into the settings and the escapist adventure feel that The Dragon Prince excels at. Updated I’m gonna be honest, I didn’t really like this book much only because I didn’t really understand what was happening at times, and stuff about the characters. I think I'm supposed to read this book, after the book series (I think), either way, I will, anyways. My goal, is to reread it after I read the series (I think) or watched the series. I love The Dragon Prince show on Netflix so obviously wanted to read this but I did tread with trepidation. But I shouldn't have worried because this is great, from the art work to dialogue to magical story telling. Callum, Rayla, Ezran, Soren, Lujanne, Phoe-Phoe all make an appearance. The story progression is after the third season so I do suggest watching the Netflix show first otherwise you'll be left wondering what's happening and you might not like it. It was great being back in this world with these characters. We learn of the fate of one of my favourite characters and I really loved that this was included as well as Rayla coming to terms with the unknown fate of her parents and Runaan. Rayla and Callum are the cutest couple.

★ 3,5 I really liked the character development in the comic and how it sets up some plots for season 4. It’s very clearly a Rayla-centric story so some of the characters were kind of just there, and the plot was very simple and straightforward, but I didn’t mind it much. The ending is the best part, because though it’ll definitely keep me up at night thinking about it (why???), I appreciate the amount of care put into Rayla’s character development, and how that ending will impact her not only in ★ 3,5 I really liked the character development in the comic and how it sets up some plots for season 4. So, is this going to be considered part of the show canonically? I guess we can only wonder, until season 4 comes out which BETTER NOT BE THAT FAR AWAY *exasperated sigh* Anyway, Rayllum is adorkable as always, we love Ezran and his animal sensibilities, and the themes of death, life, dying, grief, etc. always hit home. Plus the art was decent, so yeah.

The threat of the magically enhanced monster army of the five kingdoms has been ended with the death of Lord Viren and a new tenuous peace has been established between the human realm and the magical land of Xadia. Ezren now sits uncontested upon the throne of Katolis... Callum continues to find the secret to a connection to the magic arcanums... Soren has returned to his position as the commander of the King's Guard... ...and Rayla's position in the world has become a nightmare as each day brings reoccurring dreams and terrors that plague her every moment. But events of the past still drive the present as a return to an ally and advisor from the past brings new revelations as well as reveals a secret that may throws both worlds back into the horrors from which they have only newly emerged. In this, the first graphic novel in a new set of stories continuing where the animated showe has left off, Peter Wartman has taken a story by series co-creator Aaron Ehasz and co-writer Justin Richmond and, with the artistic talents of Xanthe Bouma, given watchers and fans of THE DRAGON PRINCE a story that feels like the natural continuation from the end of season 3. There is no real discussion either in the book, or in the online description that I can find, that specifically states IF the STORY contained here will be part of the series canon --- though with Aaron having written the script for this book odds are good that it will play into season 4 in some form or another. The characters here read exactly as they were fresh off the screen and new readers --- and continuing fans --- will hear the voices of their favorites characters as they journey through the 123 pages of graphic greatness. This first book does end on a cliffhanger that will be continued in the Volume 2 scheduled for spring of 2022...and...with Season 4 still in its various stages of development and production, the odds are that this will be one of the venues for fans to continue the story until the 4th Season drops.

I mean I liked this one and after just finishing season 3 I liked jumping right back into the world, but the story felt short and vague. We didn’t see a whole lot and I kind of felt like the whole purpose of this story was to show that Viren was still alive. I honestly would have liked that to be the first episode of season 4, but it’s fine. 🌕🦢💙

The Dragon Prince has been returned to his rightful place, and all is right with the world...or is it? Rayla is tormented by visions of Lord Viren, and finds herself obsessed with discovering if he's truly dead. Set after the events of the most recent season of the show, Through The Moon has the usual problem of stories set while a show is ongoing - it can't do too much, in case people who watch the show don't read the comic to ensure that they're not confused when season 4 hits. That said, it doesn't do too badly. A character returns, and both Callum and Rayla move forward with their relationship in some nice ways. If anything, the book is a little lopsided; the blurb tells us a lot about the final quarter of the book, so the first three quarters feel a tad drawn out. There's also a kind-of-cliffhanger ending, but I'm not sure if there are further graphic novels planned to resolve it, or if this is where season 4 of the show starts off, so we'll see. Peter Wartman captures the characters' voices easily, and I'm glad he didn't try and add Rayla's accent to her speech since that would have been a nightmare to read. The artwork from Xanthe Bouma is soft, very reminiscent of the Avatar comics. It's interesting to see the Dragon Prince universe in something other than CGI animation, and it works pretty well. Everyone's recognisable, the panels flow nicely, and the background transition midway through is a good choice. This'll whet your appetite for Dragon Prince content while we wait for the remaining seasons to arrive. It's a little hamstrung by its setting, but it does as well as it can with it, and looks pretty while it does.

Series Info/Source: This is the first volume in the Dragon Prince Graphic Novel series. My son got this as a Christmas gift and I borrowed it from him to read. If you haven’t watched the Netflix series (which is absolutely amazing BTW) you will be completely confused by what is happening here. This is just a little blip of a story and honestly doesn’t add a lot to the broader story on the Netflix series. It is done in keeping with the style of the Netflix series though and was okay. Characters (3/5): The characters stay true to form with the Netflix series. I didn’t feel like there was a ton of growth and there are a lot of characters from that series kind of shoved into this book. Again, I do love the characters from this series but felt like their representation here was just okay. Setting (3/5): The Moon Nexus was interesting but again I feel like the magical, beautiful settings of the Netflix series weren’t as well portrayed in graphic novel format. It was okay but lacking a lot of the magic and beauty of the cartoon. Writing/Drawing Style (3/5): In keeping with the theme of the rest of this review, this was okay. The drawing style stayed true to the cartoon, it just wasn’t quite as lush and beautiful. The writing style kept the same ironic tone of the cartoon but just wasn’t as humorous and funny. This whole thing was like a weak and unnecessary shadow to the original cartoon series. My Summary (3/5): Overall this was okay but definitely something I could have skipped reading. Unless you are a seriously diehard Dragon Prince fan I would skip this. Me and my family absolutely adore the Dragon Prince Netflix cartoon series, but still felt that this was just kind of unnecessary and blah. I would recommend skipping and just wait for the next Dragon Prince season to release.

I hesitated to buy and read this at first, because I had this idea that tie-in books are 'filler' material, not important enough to be part of the main series, but good enough to move some copies off shelves. Well, I've never been so pleased to say that I was wrong. The writing here is deft and deliberate, with the same sense (as in the show) that every detail is there for a reason. Everyone's characterisation is on point, and I could hear the dialogue in their voices. Quite quick in pacing and the balance of events felt off, with Rayla's mystical journey barely holding any weight.
