Review of Hope Denney’s Historical Novel Redemption I recently finished Hope Denney’s, Redemption, fourth novel in her historical fiction series cataloguing the intrigues, tragedies, and happy endings (sort of) of two dysfunctional Southern families, the Forrests of Alabama and the Marshalls of Virginia. The saga is set following the War Between the States, but the road to disunion for these two proud families began decades earlier with the cutthroat betrayal of the Forrests by the Marshall patriarch. The subsequent tumultuous marriage of Blanch Marshall and Thomas Forrest, consummated in deception and poisoned during the ensuing decades by spousal contempt and mendacity, cast shadows on the disaffected and sometimes twisted offspring of the parents. The saga centers on Somerset Forrest, the middle child of Blanch and Thomas’ five children, the daughter of war and loss, grief and recovery, lost and new-found loves, but all shadowed by the fate of her parents, siblings, and the familial secrets and burdens bequeathed by the two generations preceding her, a legacy she loves to hate (IMO), and one she will never let go. Each novel builds on the one before, so don’t jump into Redemption without first treating yourself to the earlier novels, Surrender at Orchard’s Rest, Echoes at Somerset Manor, and Love at the Marsh. For those of you already familiar with Ms. Denney’s work, Redemption continues the tribulations of Joseph and Ivy Forrest’s ill-omened marriage, but with twists, turns, and past mysteries thrown in to intensify the crises of the present. For all: If you love well-drawn, sympathetic and unsympathetic characters shaped by upbringing and societal norms, with mystery and romance thrown in, you’ll love this series.

This series of books was so fun. I really got wrapped up in the many characters and their stories. I’m really going to miss them and I do hope to read more in the future. Thank you to Hope Denny for a great story.
