Steeped in the Christmas spirit, The Mistletoe Countess is one of the sweetest, most romantic love stories I’ve read in ages. It contains all of my favorite things in one delightful package: a gentle heroine, a hero with a past, a marriage of convenience, and loads of swoony kisses. There’s even a mystery! I feel like Pepper Basham wrote this book just for me. Highly recommended!

Frederick Percy, Lord Astley, must marry for money to save his family’s financially strapped estate. So he goes to America to make a deal with a very rich man to marry his eldest daughter. He signs the agreement to wed Miss Lillias Ferguson. Then he inadvertently kisses her younger sister Grace. The situation then takes a turn Lord Astley never expected and Grace volunteers to marry him in place of her sister to turn scandal away from both families. They marry and head home to England. But not before an attempt is made on Lord Astley’s life. Followed by more attempts. Grace is convinced something sinister is afoot and is bound and determined to discover just what is going on in this family. After all, she reads Conan Doyle and is an amateur sleuth. Pepper Basham has just created the best story! Her concoction of Grace Ferguson was so amazing! Grace is the most delightful creature, full of exuberance and longing for an adventure of her own. She is a total bookworm and completely guileless. Grace’s character is one you’ll love to love. She is full of life, totally to the brim. She is one of those people who lives 1 Corinthians 13: ‘love is patient and kind, not jealous, boastful or proud, or rude, doesn’t demand its own way, not irritable, keeps no record of wrongs, never gives up, never loses faith, is always hopeful and endures through every circumstance.’ Grace sacrificed her own desire for adventure to help Lord Astley’s family and does it willingly. As she danced along the pages of this book, I smiled near continuously at her simply ‘being’. Grace longs for a grand adventure and believes this just may be it. Lord Astley was developed quite well also. A man who feels he’ll never measure up and haunted by past mistakes discovers how loved he is by God and just how much he has to offer. On the pages of this book, both Frederick and Grace discover that dreams can come true that you didn’t even know you were dreaming. Basham’s way with a story is completely irrepressible. Her way with characters is not to be missed as the reader is carried along on a wave of pure delight as the story unfolds. And she gives us more than a good dose of her charming humor. There were parts I laughed out loud! Basham also throws in a great Gothic-like mystery along the lines of Daphne Du Maurier and Agatha Christie. Well done! I could not put this I could not put this book down! I tried, so as to prolong the reading pleasure, but my hunger to discover the ending captured me at every turn. This one is destined to be a top read for 2021! Highly recommended. My thanks to the publisher and author for a copy of this book via Net Galley.I was not compensated and the opinion here is entirely my own.

After Frederick and Grace marry, they make their transition to life in England. Grace doesn't fit the expectations of what Lady Percy should be and her ideas and actions add spice to the sedate home. While I enjoy mysteries, it wasn't my favorite aspect of this novel. It primarily surfaced in the second half of the novel. The words spent on kissing and other physical aspects of the relationship between Frederick and Grace will appeal to many readers, but was more than I would have preferred. Overall, a good novel that includes warm characters and a dash of humor as expected in a Basham novel. My gratitude to publisher Barbour for a complimentary NetGalley copy of the novel. I've never met a Pepper Basham book that I didn't love, but wow! Thanks to some quick (and possibly hasty) thinking on his intended's sister's part, the young, innocent Grace offers to take her sister's place, and marries the Duke so they can both hold up their respective ends of the betrothal bargain. In doing so, she and Frederick plow head-first into a marriage of convenience turned storybook romance, not to mention the fascinating mystery surrounding his beloved Havensbrooke. The untimely deaths of his father and brother, as well as some suspicious accidents surrounding Lord Astley, and then Grace, not to mention a resident ghost haunting a vacant wing give this story quite the Gothic vibe. For me, the best part was how obviously Freddie is head over heels in love with his new, unexpected, and nothing like what he planned wife, and getting to see a peek inside this lovely married couple romance is just absolutely refreshing! There isn't nearly enough married romance in Christian fiction, "but romance has to be worth something if people throughout all time have spent years, money, risk and a whole host of daydreams in finding it." Grace is adorable, and you'll find yourself in stitches trying to keep up with her antics. One of my favorite reads of 2021! I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher via NetGalley and was under no obligation to write a review.

Both Grace and Frederick were two characters that I immediately liked. I loved the way they met and even Frederick’s first reaction to the thought of Grace stepping in as his bride. I liked so many things about this couple. First, they really talked to each other. Second, they both were determined to care for each other first as friends and then, hopefully, as something more. Third, I appreciated the pace that Frederick took in their marriage. He didn’t rush Grace, but he also did not withhold his affections. And those affections between the two of them helped to build a strong relationship together that was both emotional and eventually, physical. Grace brought a vibrancy and vitality to her new home, as well as a wonderful imagination. Even though Frederick was a bit slow to believe that there was something sinister afoot, I really enjoyed the way they eventually worked together to solve the mystery of the dangerous events that kept befalling them. This truly is one of my favorite books now and although I listened to the story this time, I hope to also purchase the print copy soon, too. These are characters that I am still thinking of days later. You can read this review on my blog: https://brittreadsfiction.wordpress.c...

Readers will delight at meeting naive Gracelynn Ferguson and will thrill at her inquisitive nature while enjoying quite a number of her misadventures along the way. She's a force to be reckoned with and duty bound Frederick has met his "match" in more ways than one. Pepper writes some of the best romances I've ever read, but The Mistletoe Countess raises the bar another level with innocent Grace's marriage to older experienced Frederick. When I wasn't laughing out loud at their step by step "testing the waters" relationship I was swooning, when my toes weren't curling I was laughing again. These are Pepper Basham's writing specialties, romance and humor. Frederick and Grace are the heartbeat of this story, but other characters are so diverse and appealing readers will feel as if they've fallen into a British historical mystery series. I especially love best friend Blake and Aunt Lavenia. In addition to being one of the best books I've read this year, it also is the most quotable. There are so many funny lines, inspirational thoughts and words of wisdom readers will come away with a heart fully satisfied with this outstanding reading experience. A few of my favorite quotes from Grace, "Oh dear, I've gone down the dark road of impropriety again, haven't I?" "Could someone die of dislike for a daughter-in-law? Would that be considered murder or suicide?" And a few of my favorite quotes from Frederick, "Is it exhausting to live inside your mind?" "My dear, if I didn't know you had such a kind heart, I'd be terrified of you." I cannot recommend The Mistletoe Countess highly enough. I'm on the edge of my seat waiting to read future exploits of Grace, Frederick and the Havensbrooke staff. I appreciate Barbour Publishing, through Netgalley, providing a copy of The Mistletoe Countess for review. All thoughts and opinions are my very own.

What a delightful book. I loved the entire cast of characters. I loved all the book references. I loved the major Lakeshire Park and Edenbrooke vibes. I loved the faith woven through on almost every page. I loved the marriage of convenience and the swoony romance. I loved that during the suspense scenes, the characters had me laughing so hard. I actually liked it better than Hope Between the Pages, because it didn't have the whole sad thread. I thought some of the descriptors at the beginning got repetitive when talking about Grace's authenticity but that's really the only con I can think of, and I feel like I'm stretching to even mention it. Well done, Pepper. I loved this one and already preordered it for a friend. Younger readers who prefer not to know that married people enjoy sleeping together will probably find too many mentions to such bliss in this book. Seriously...drum roll, please...I have never, ever done this before BUT the time has finally come that I can honestly say BEST BOOK OF THE YEAR!!!! And I never do top ten lists or best lists -- I love so many genres and so many writing styles and I'm pretty much the number one fan of whatever I'm reading at the moment, plus, I've never been able to rate books without feeling horribly guilty, like I'm cheating on my friends... Until now. MISTLETOE COUNTESS IS MY TOP READ FOR 2021 (and I've read 270 books so far this year!) And I'm not sure I can even explain why without giving too much of the plot away so I can't gush the way I really want to in enthusiastic fangirling overdrive. Love, love, love this heroine. I feel for Grace the way I do for the heroines of my childhood. Anne Shirley, Jo March, Lucy Pevensie, Sara Crewe...characters who shaped my world and became lifelong friends. Grace has taken her place in this very special sisterhood, forever etched into my heart. And this book --- I'm as drawn to it as I am to those childhood classics that literally defined me. It's the kind of story you want to hold tight and savor all the exquisite nuances that make up an unforgettable adventure. There's hope and laughter. Insightful wisdom. Deep, abiding faith. Joy -- so much joy -- even in the midst of trials. A plot brimming with mystery and romance. Even a bit of a Gothic vibe in places. And delightful bookish references! And as unexpected as it is familiar...hmmmm, what do I mean by that? Wellllllll, I can't tell you or I'd ruin your reading experience but once you've read it, let's talk! And talk. And talk! Because there is so much depth and heart and... Heat...wheeewwwww....this is a kissing book so you definitely need a fainting couch, smelling salts, a fan and a spare because I swear a certain scene is what fried the motor in my fan (which has been working fine all summer, mind you!) Which leads me to Frederick. Thud. That's all. Just. Thud. (insert swooning on fainting couch emoji here.) I listened to the audible edition narrated by Pamela Klein and she did a brilliant job of breathing life into these characters. An excellent pairing of author and narrator. So much so that when I reached the -- gasp -- end and grew somewhat despondent and bereft, I started listening to it all over again. Yep. Back-to-back listening. I've never done that before! And I loved The Mistletoe Countess as much the second time around -- if not more.

She is unique and larger than life. She is witty, intelligent, genuine, a bit naive, loves books and is a burst of sunshine wherever she goes. I so enjoyed the book with the lovely settings, manor house, wonderful characters and uplifting theme. I adore everything about this book. I’m not sure how to properly gush over it because I can’t come up with anything to accurately depict how much I love this book. It felt like a historical Hart to Hart (a TV show I have loved for years with a married couple solving mysteries). I want to hang out with Grace and let her feed my imagination with her adventures. And follow Freddie around his manor as he tells me the history of it. And have tea with Aunt Lavenia as she shocks me with her opinions. I I adore everything about this book. The Mistletoe Countess by Pepper Basham is one my favorite books of the year. With the best heroine who is absolutely adorable with her quirkiness and soft, tender heart, you'll find yourself with a best friend for life. The hero, let's just say I've pictured a very handsome and broody man who fits every Mr. Rochester and Mr. Darcy fantasy of romance, but with a heart that is redeemed and let's his wife be herself. And loves her for it. The inspirational and spiritual nuggets throughout the book The Mistletoe Countess by Pepper Basham is one my favorite books of the year. In This book we follow Grace and Frederick and their romance. I really liked This book, i liked the sweet clean romance. I liked the suspense in the book. But most of all I loved the Main characters in This book. The spunky grace, a kick Ass woman, but witha golden heart. Frederick the more quiet person, but a person you Will fall on love with. The grumpy butler and The quirky servant chefs kiss. I would highly recommend This book Thank you to netgalley for letting me read This e arc in exchange In This book we follow Grace and Frederick and their romance. It's not often that I feel timid when it comes to writing a review, but I do in the case of this brilliant story, because I know there are no words I can string together that will come anywhere close to doing this incredible book justice! But I will do my best! For starters, I loved Grace, she is probably my favorite heroine of all time, she is so much fun in all her bookish delightfulness, she never fails to make me laugh, and I love her outlook on life! I seriously wish Grace was real because It's not often that I feel timid when it comes to writing a review, but I do in the case of this brilliant story, because I know there are no words I can string together that will come anywhere close to doing this incredible book justice! But I will do my best! For starters, I loved Grace, she is probably my favorite heroine of all time, she is so much fun in all her bookish delightfulness, she never fails to make me laugh, and I love her outlook on life! I seriously wish Grace was real because I would totally claim her as my BFF! And, Frederick, oh my stars, what a swoonilicious hunk of a hero! He is humorous, selfless, sweet, protective, caring, thoughtful, just the right amount of brooding, the tiniest bit deliciously roguish, and he's a reader! Trust me, you'll fall head over heels in love with him, and this book has plenty of kisses that are guaranteed to make you swoon! This book is hilariously funny, it had me laughing out loud more times than I count, and in my opinion it's simply impossible for this story to not put a smile on your face. The faith message in this book touched my heart with the reminder of who we are in Christ, how much God loves us just the way we are, and that even if our life story isn't playing out the way we thought it would the Author of life is still in control of our story and He is writing something for our lives that is more beautiful than we could have ever imagined! The Mistletoe Countess truly contains everything you could ever want in a Christian historical romance: fantabulous characters that you fall in love with; humor; fun; an English country estate; drama; mystery; suspense; a faith message that will touch your heart; a Christmastime setting; all the bookish conversation; and of course a sigh-worthy romance that will put a giddy grin on your face, leave you hoping for a sequel, and have you gushing about it on social media with all the heart-eyes emojis! I seriously can't find the words to describe my deep and abiding love for this story! The best way I can think of to describe it is to say, picture your perfect day and then imagine how that day would make you feel. Well, that's how reading this book made me feel, pure bliss! The Mistletoe Countess is my favorite book of Pepper's and it's one of my top 5 favorite reads of 2021! The Mistletoe Countess is perfection! There were times I found myself re-reading lines just so I could bask in the sheer brilliance of the writing! This story is an absolutely and completely delightful romp that is guaranteed to bring immense joy to your life! Trust me, you do not want to miss this one! I received an ebook copy of this book from the publisher via Netgalley, but I will definitely be purchasing it in both paperback and audio because I love it so much! My review was not influenced in any way. All thoughts and opinions are one hundred percent my own.

I just loved this story! I'm a huge fan of anything written by Pepper Basham, and so I knew I'd have to read this one. It does not disappoint! This story is...Delicious. Romantic. Fun. Mysterious. When Grace has to step in and take her sister's place, she is unexpectedly forced to marry and become a countess. This is quite difficult for her. (oh wait...how much can I say and not give any spoilers...) This does have a bit of mystery in these pages... I loved seeing how Grace and Frederich Percy, Lord Astley, get to know each other and fall in love... Pepper Basham has given us a delightful story, it does have a bit of that marriage-of-convenience, but it is written in such a beautiful way I couldn't help but fall in love with not only the characters, but also the setting. I hated it when pesky chores and sleep got in the way of my reading, so you will definitely want to make sure you secure plenty of reading space in your schedule in order to enjoy and devour this lovely read. "He tipped his head toward her, breathing in the life she brought into these dead rooms. ‘You think I’m strong enough for this?’ ‘Of course I do, but not only I. God doesn’t go about placing people haphazardly into their stories. He must think you are strong enough too.’" --The Mistletoe Countess One of my most favorite topics of discussion in this story is the idea that we are all placed in the exact right story. God doesn’t make mistakes. If He places us somewhere that’s where He wants us. It’s reminiscent of Esther 4:14 — we are all where God wants us “for such as time as this.” The thing is though sometimes it feels like maybe we’re not cut out for the place God put us. Maybe we feel too cowardly or too small or too insignificant or too unqualified. Yes, we can accept that God put us where we’re at because He is God and we respect Him, but sometimes it takes a minute or two to understand why He put us where we’re at. Grace is an American who comes from New Money. She is the second daughter, so expectations for her are less stringent at the moment than they are for her beautiful elder sister. Her sister, Lillias, is engaged to Lord Frederick Percy. She appears to be the ideal woman for British Society — she is poised, elegant, and refined. She knows the latest fashions, has impeccable taste, and knows what to say and when to say it. All things considered, Lillias is perfect for Frederick. But, as life would have it, a hiccup happens and Grace finds herself taking her sister’s place and becoming Lady Astley. Grace is an awesome character. Her heart is golden and she is all compassion and kindness. She always considers the feelings of others and loves to bring the best out of them. But, she’s not 100% certain at first that she is qualified to be part of the British aristocracy or a good wife for Frederick, and she does wonder what God is doing especially since this is putting a wrench into her life plans. Grace, however, fully trusts that God has her where she belongs, but it is going to take her a moment to figure out her place in her new world. What I love so much about Grace is that she never doubts God. Never. She is an excellent example of what it looks like to trust God in every facet of one’s life — especially in those moments that don’t go according to our plans. I admit that The Mistletoe Countess came into my life at just the right time. One, I needed this reminder that God doesn’t make mistakes when He places us where He does. And, two, I really needed an illustration of what it looks like to trust God no matter what. I love when a book comes into your hands just when you need it most! There are like 7,458 more reasons to love The Mistletoe Countess — it’s that chock full of awesomeness. I highly, highly recommend this novel. If you are in the mood for an excellent Historical Romance filled with great characters, tons of fun chemistry, and lots of suspense then you’ve got to put The Mistletoe Countess on the top of your TBR list today! I received a copy of this novel in eBook form from the publisher, Barbour Fiction, via NetGalley in order to review. In no way has this influenced my review. The opinions expressed in this review are my own.

Fans of Pepper Basham will be more than happy with this new offering. Grace reminded me of an amped-up version of Anne Shirley. Throw in a little mystery, an English aristocrat, and A marriage -of-convenience trope, and you’ve got a book to curl up by the fire with.

It's Christmas in July! 4.5 stars for this sweet Christmastime historical romance. When I first opened this book, I thought it was going to be terribly predictable. But when everything I thought was going to happen in the book had happened by the 25% mark, I wondered what in the world was going to happen for the rest of the book. The answer is - married romance (which I much prefer), a pretty intense mystery and a good dose of humor. The answer is - married romance (which I much prefer), a pretty intense mystery and a good dose of humor. I had several laugh out loud moments in this book, as well as wondering how on earth the mystery was going to play out. Those things kept me turning pages. The characters were quite lovely and Grace's affinity for fiction was endearing. In addition to the mystery, romance and humor, there were also some life lessons on conflict in marriage, gratitude and reliance on God. All in all, this was a thoroughly enjoyable read. There are 2 minor things that kept me from giving this a full 5 stars - first of all, there was a bit more passion than I'm comfortable with. Since the passion happens after marriage and what we "see" is still chaste, I'm not deducting much for it, but the kisses were more passionate than I prefer - total matter of preference - but if you're sensitive to that as I am - just note that there is some passionate kissing. Secondly, Grace's boundless optimism, while endearing, also began to grate on me a bit by the end of the book. Everyone has a bad day here and there, but there was nothing that seemed to get Grace down. While I loved that about her, it also made her character a bit less "real" to me by the end. Neither of those were major issues and overall, this was a rather enjoyable read. Though it takes place at Christmas-time and there are Christmas decorations (and plenty of mistletoe), this book can truly be enjoyed at any time of year as the Christmas "theme" is more background of timing. The real story is of the mystery and romance, which can be enjoyed at any time of year. Special thanks to Barbour Publishing and NetGalley for an advance e-copy of this book. I was under no obligation to provide a review and the thoughts contained herein are my own.

Basham is such a talented writer and humor is her best quality. Especially with this type of story! I loved it with all my heart because Basham made me giggle so much! I think Grace will be forever my favorite character. She just has that amazing personality and like me has never grown up! Her outlook on life is so joyful and I don't know. I just love her! And she's very brave too! Best of all, she's a lover of fiction just like I am! Lord Astly is quite the character too! He's more than just a lord. Much much more. Basham rounded him out quite well too. He'll make you "swoon" for sure! Many surprises in this cute story and I think that this is Basham's best yet simply because of the humor and truth that woven throughout the novel I finished this book in several days because I didn't want it to end! Good it was! List of 2021 favorites folks! Even buying a copy for my keeper shelf! Thanks Barbour publishing/Netgalley for a copy of this fun book. I was NOT required to write a positive review. THIS BOOK! I laughed out loud, teared up, and stayed up way, way too late reading each night. Just when I think I’ve found my favorite Pepper Basham book, she does it again! This will definitely be a novel I reread. The faith elements spoke right to my heart, and I have no doubt God used this book to encourage me. The sheer hilarity of the heroine brought me so much joy, and the hero’s story arc was fabulous too. The chemistry between these two? Spectacular! While I was reading, I kept thinking THIS BOOK! The sweetest and wittiest story! Finished it in two days. 😮🥰 If only there would be a Grace and Frederick sequel...or, even better, a series! :) Will definitely buy a copy of this as I was only able to read the free ARC provided by NetGalley and the formatting was a little off.
