This author knows how to write a tale of romance, danger and mystery in an intriguing time-slip book. Ms. McDaniel did a superb job of weaving the two time periods together by connecting them in unexpected ways. Just when I thought I had it figured out-BAM! Plot twist! Meanwhile, Chase agrees to help her with a contest she has entered to showcase The Belle of Louisville as a wedding venue. The author takes us back in time when Hattie Louis worked and lived on the steamboat where she meets Jack who might not be who she thinks he is. Her descriptions make me want to visit the old steamboat and Louisville, Kentucky. The faith thread was constant within: “God had a way of leading His children. It may not be the course Devyn imagined, but as long as she stayed in the current of His love, she knew she could rely on Him in both still and troubled waters. He was faithful through it all.” Polished and interesting with swoony romance, this is why I love dual time books. *I received a complimentary copy of this ebook from the author. Oh. My. Goodness! As you can see, I gave this book 5 stars!! First of all, I loved the present and the past in equal measure. There were cliffhangers at the end of chapters that had me considering skipping chapters so I could finish one era or at least the "moment" they were in. I didn't! That would've totally ruined it, of course. We initially meet Devyn and I loved her from the moment just before she meets Chase Jones. They have some seriously fun banter and dialogue throughout the entire story. I was drawn in by the photo he brings her, which sets them on a mystery hunt for my next favorite character! She's also been hurt and it's clear she has no desire to help Chase out for any reason, but his offer to her for her help is one she just can't ignore. And Chase, with his secret that Devyn can't figure out. Seriously, you just feel for the guy from the start! Oh, Hattie! Here we head back to 1926. If only I had the same kind of gumption as she did. It was a kick in the pants as we meet her and Jack. If you're ready for your heart to grow for a couple, be prepared with these two! They're both strong and fiery. I could NOT for the life of me figure Jack out, just like Hattie. Like her, it was kind of making me crazy. lol And her "adopted" father, Duffy just warmed my heart. I absolutely adored the Belle/Idlewild. She became one of the characters of the story and I actually teared up at one spot towards the end. I know, sounds goofy, but wait until you read it and then you'll understand! There were some twists that were completely unexpected and that really excited me and as I kept reading, to watch it all unfold was heart-filling! Of course with any good mystery (two for the price of one with this story) there are terrible people who you just want to shove into the river as the Belle/Idlewild is moving right along. I obviously can't say a lot about the storyline or the plot twists because they are at the heart of the story! Let me just say you will be completely satisfied at the end of the book! *I received this book for review. This is my personal opinion.

Undercurrent of Secrets by Rachel Scott McDaniel is a duel time line and it flowed flawlessly. I never felt the story being disrupted, or annoyed by going from the 1900's to the present time. I enjoyed both time periods, and all the characters. This book contained some suspense, mystery, and two oh so sweet romances. This author knows how to write romance!! She is a new to me author and I will definitely be reading more books by her. Undercurrent of Secrets is the first book I've read by author Rachel Scott McDaniel. I was immediately hooked, and this beautiful dual timeline story kept me turning pages late into the night! A perfect blend of page-turning contemporary and historical fiction, mystery, and romance! What I love about dual timeline stories is how the two are connected by the end. For the historical fiction portion, upon finishing the story, I love googling the history I was unaware of until this book! When I finished Undercurrent of Secrets and the author's notes, I immediately googled The Belle of Louisville, trying to see if I can work that into my upcoming travel plans not too far from there. Codebreaker Elizabeth Friedman is mentioned in this book. (I was excited to know who she was since I read 'The Woman Who Smashed Codes: A True Story of Love, Spies, and the Unlikely Heroine Who Outwitted America's Enemies" a few years ago after visiting the National Cryptologic Museum, during a reader/writer weekend in Maryland.) Thank you to the author and publisher for allowing me to read an early copy of Undercurrent of Secrets. I highly recommend it, and I can't wait to read other books by this author that are on my to-be-read pile! All opinions are my own.

This story swept me away from page one, and I wasn’t ready to say goodbye to these characters when I turned the final page! Devyn is an amazing character and I found myself relating to her in several ways. And Chase, oh my, talk about a sweet, swoon-worthy hunk of a hero! And historical hero Jack is equally swoon-worthy in his own right! (I totally and unashamedly finished this book with two new book boyfriends!) And, of course I can’t forget Hattie, I loved her so much, she’s such an inspiring character, and I totally wanna be like her when I grow up! As a history nerd I love the way Rachel makes history come alive for the reader, and she writes so beautifully and brilliantly that the story plays out like a movie in my mind’s eye. I felt like I was really there on the Idlewild/Belle of Louisville sailing on the Ohio river! The faith story in this book is utterly magnificent, powerful, and soul stirring. It touched my heart deeply! Aside from getting two amazing stories in one book the thing I love most about time-slip novels is the way the two storylines intertwine, and in this one, oh my goodness, the amazing way Hattie and Devyn’s stories connect is so beautiful it not only put a huge smile on my face, but in my reader heart as well, and nearly brought me to tears! Bravo, Rachel! I absolutely and completely adored every single moment of this book, and I’m already eagerly looking forward to a re-read! I most highly recommend Undercurrent of Secrets! If you only read one book during the remainder of 2021 make it this one, you won’t be sorry! Undercurrent of Secrets is everything I want in a book and so much more, it’s one of my favorite reads of 2021, and has a permanent spot on my keeper shelf! I received a complimentary copy of this book. My review was not influenced in any way. All thoughts and opinions are one hundred percent my own.

I enjoyed the steamboat setting as it made this story all the more intriguing as Chase and Devvy dig deep to uncover secrets of the Belle of Louisville riverboat. I liked the way the author naturally wove in the faith element as Devyn struggled with letting go of control and letting God be in charge of everything. I also enjoyed how the author had Devyn and Chase learn interesting things about the ship in current time, and then the make that event in history come alive, so readers could get the full effect of the situation. 4.5 stars! Characters: Most of the time when I read split-time novels, I end up liking one story way better than the other and kind of dreading when the other one comes up. I'm happy to report this wasn't the case with this one (at least not most of the time). And I'm pretty sure one of the reasons I liked both stories was the characters. Both Devyn (the modern main lady) and Hattie (the historical main lady) had great personalities. I especially like Hattie's sense of humor. Language: Clean. Mora 4.5 stars! Moral: The main theme of this book was trusting God. Let's just say Devyn had problems with this :) Plot: Like I said before, I enjoyed both the modern and the historical stories. Plenty of character developments, plot twists, and suspenseful elements (in the historical plot) kept me flipping pages. I did see Chase's revelation coming for a while, but it was still a good twist. Romance: Clean. A few kisses. A couple of parts got a little sappier than I would've liked, but I guess I can't complain when I pick up a romance novel :) One other picky thing ... I got a little tired of reading about just how handsome Jack (the historical guy) and Chase (the modern guy) were. Writing: This is the first book I've read by Rachel, and I don't want it to be the last. Her writing style worked well with both the modern and the historical stories, and I loved the unique voices she gave her main characters. Overall: Undercurrent of Secrets was an entertaining read, and I'd recommend it to those who enjoy Christian fiction, split-time novels, historical romance, and contemporary romance.

While I wasn’t abandoned as an infant on the Louisville Wharf, I AM the BIGGEST loafer in the boundaries of my comfort zone. Stepping out into new territory doesn't come easily for me and yet, with this book that's exactly what I had to do. ~I've never written a split-time story. And that in itself scared me. Could I do it? Or would I fall on my face? This was the first time I had the contract BEFORE the story was written. No pressure or anything, right?! ~I never written first person POV. All my other stories are written third person and so this was an adjustment for me. While writing the historical timeline, I caught myself many times slipping back into my previous writing style. ~I never wrote a contemporary story. Okay, this one was more terrifying than I'd like to admit. But, I'm so used to writing historicals I was concerned I didn't have it in me to create a believable contemporary storyline. Take ALL of these insecurities and add a world epidemic (Because 2020 was when I wrote this book) That was what I faced when writing this story. But sometimes it’s in these seasons of challenges where we grow the most. By God’s grace, I was able to finish on deadline (Actually a week before!) Now, this story is out of my hands and belongs to you, dear reader. We all know reading is subjective, and not every story will resonate with every reader. But I do hope this book reaches the ones who need gentle encouragement and the reminder that perfect love drives out fear. (Also I’m totally marking this “Read” because I’ve read this thing a gazillion times 😂)

This story immediately captured my attention from beginning until the end. The author was skillful in developing well-rounded and life-like characters, while the plot flowed seamlessly throughout each chapter. There are moments when dual timelines in stories are not my preference, however, the author did a wonderful job connecting both timelines and making it easy to follow throughout the book. The main characters, Hattie and Devyn were very likable protagonists. Their stories are heartfelt, touching and intricately expressed on every page. Each woman’s narrative highlights the tragic trials and hurts that these women endured from a perspective in the past and one in the present. Hattie and Devyn’s faith in God, whatever His Plan, enabled them to overcome the obstacles they had to face. So far this year, I have had very few new authors where I have given them a high rating. This author was pleasingly impressive. An astonishingly historical Christian story full of faith and another in this series that was worth the read. Looking forward to continuing this series and highly recommend the read. Thank you NetGalley and Barbour Publishing Inc. for this ARC in exchange for my fair and honest review. All opinions are my own.

Ooooh so. I might have just discovered that this is #4 in a series. BUT. I have already read two of them! Woo hoo! (Allison Pittman's The Lady in Residence and Pepper Basham's Hope Between the Pages, if you were curious.) And, even better, each is a standalone read. So feel free to get cracking on those already released before this one comes out September 1. Your mission, should you choose to accept it ... :D I had a gut feeling that Undercurrent of Secrets would be a fantastic read, because Rachel Scott McDaniel wrote it--and she’s an amazing author! Much to my delight, I wasn’t wrong. The read is everything I fully expected it to be! I particularly loved the faith element woven throughout. We see characters grappling with faith and tough questions, asking God for wisdom during the process and not just after they’re already in a pickle. I would love to see more examples of this in Christian fiction! The time-slip component was particularly well done; I often prefer one storyline over another, but McDaniel does an admirable (LOL, no pun intended--you’ll get it when you read it!) job at breathing life into both time periods and sets of characters. Now I would really like to see the real steamboat in person, too. I had no idea it really exists! Fan-flipping-tastic read. I received an eARC of the book from the publisher via NetGalley. All opinions are my own.

I never read contemporary fiction, but I wanted to give this time-split novel a try because I adore Rachel McDaniel’s first two books. I was not disappointed. As an author, I can appreciate the complexity of writing a book with a dual timeline and basically two entirely different casts of characters, but McDaniel pulled it off in a way that felt seamless and did the work for the reader, leaving me free to enjoy the story without confusion. Since I don’t read books with characters who have names like “Devyn”—in fact, don’t even like most twenty-somethings I meet—I was unprepared for her to be my favorite character. She had depth, pluck, and was hilarious. Her banter with Chase was so much fun. Most of all, she felt real, like somebody I could sit down and have a pizza with and we’d talk for hours about history, classic movies, and relationships. Hattie and the 1920s storyline were both delightful. It was sweet watching how she grew in her courage and how Jack slowly earned her trust and expanded her narrow world. I loved learning about the Belle, with several other interesting historical tidbits thrown in. As with McDaniel’s first two books, it was clear she did her research, and she weaves it in expertly. Finally, the book was a page-turner. I stayed up way too late because I got anxious for the characters and had to know how everything resolved! I received an advance copy from the publisher; all opinions are my own.

I'd previously read and really loved two other stories in the Doors to the Past series, and I was eagerly looking forward to diving into a third. This was my first experience with a Rachel Scott McDaniel novel, and wow I couldn't have enjoyed it more. She truly nailed the dual timeline, the two swoon worthy and heartwarming romances, and inspired me to study more about the steamboat that plays an integral role throughout the course of the stories happening in each timeline. She truly nailed the dual timeline, the two swoon worthy and heartwarming romances, and inspired me to study more about the steamboat that plays an integral role throughout the course of the stories happening in each timeline. I loved how relatable each of the main female protagonists were, and my heart truly hurt for the many horrific things these ladies have had to go through. Perhaps my favorite part of the entire story is how strong the faith element was. With the obstacles that have been thrown into both Hattie and Devyn's pathways, it would have been easy for them to turn bitter and angry. However, instead each lady is determined to keep their eye on Jesus, and trust that He has a plan, even if it's not the plan they would have maybe chosen for themselves. I can honestly say that this series is quickly becoming a new favorite for me, and I can't recommend this beautifully written dual timeline novel enough. Rachel Scott McDaniel effortlessly pulls the reader into her story, and I could barely bring myself to put this one down once I started it. I can't pick a favorite of the two timelines, as I honestly adored them both, and I was pleasantly surprised at how everything comes together to connect the two stories in ways I never could have seen coming. Not only do I look forward to continuing on with reading more books from this series in the future, but I also cannot wait to read more books from Rachel Scott McDaniel. She's definitely impressed me with this one, and I can't honestly recommend it enough. Final Rating: 5/5. Thanks so much to Barbour Publishing for allowing me to advance read and review this! I voluntarily read and reviewed a complimentary advance reader copy of this novel from the publisher (Barbour) in exchange for an honest review. I was not required to give a positive review. An excellent story told in a split-time book that took me a little while to get into the mystery. Historical fiction with a mystery is one of my favorite genres. An engaging dual timeline story! It starts out feeling like a light contemporary romance, but switches gears as the past story is blended in. The romance in this book book built simultaneously with the mystery and by the end I was hanging by a thread in a ball of anxiety! No spoilers!
