In fact, there are so many business books on the shelves that it can be overwhelming to determine which are worth reading. The Self-Employed Life: Business and Personal Development Strategies That Create Sustainable Success by Jeffrey Shaw Is such kind of inspiring and actionable business book that provide you, or the small business owner on your gift list, with advice, insight, tips, and resources for a boost to your career and business success. The Self-Employed Life: Business and Personal Development Strategies That Create Sustainable Success  is the rare book that will get you to think and inspire you to act. Jeffrey Shaw makes a strong, science-based case for rethinking motivation--and then provides the tools you need to transform your life. The book is fascinating in many aspects. First, it opened my mind with the concept of Personal development: Remove limited thinking and establish forward-thinking mindsets. Also, Business strategies: marketing, business model, systems and other key tools for growing your business. Second, Daily habits: Efficient and effective habits to even out the ups and downs of being self-employed and purpose to be a very sensible and powerful combination of ideas. I have experienced first hand how potent these concepts combined can be, but before reading this book I couldn't quite articulate what was the cause of such success. The book opens a world of possible paths to investigate and learn much more, with dozens of references to other studies, other authors working on similar ideas and many interesting suggestions and advice on how to try these concepts in personal and professional life. Jeffrey Shaw's a gifted writer who turns even the heaviest scientific study into something digestible-and often amusing-without losing his intellectual punch. His ideas deserve a wide hearing. Corporate boards, in fact, could do well by kicking out their pay consultants for an hour and reading Jeffrey's conclusions instead. Highly Recommended! #bookrecommendation

On that note, author Jeffrey Shaw offers a bunch of practical advice to help you take a look at your venture, from a different lens. How does he know about solo-preneurship? Well, an esteemed and experienced speaker and small-business consultant, Shaw draws his list of strategies from experience running his own business. In the book, he proposes the idea of visualizing the self-employed life as an ecosystem that needs to be catered and build, steadily. He demarcates this idea, into three logical divisions, personal development, business strategies and daily habits. Within these areas of the ecosystem, the business shall thrive. Also, along the lines of introducing the readers to the world of self-employment, the author also takes great measures to ensure the disfunction of myths. These include a stereotyped vision of an easy road to riches or delegation of your work to others. It's true in itself to let readers understand obstacles in the way and that growing a business takes away every bit of energy that is available to you. It teaches to be flexible and develop spacious strategies, so that they may occupy to changes and thus, adapt accordingly. Shaw has a very clear look out for entrepreneurial aspirants. He says that being your boss, is not a regular job. It has the power to sustain your life and other's as well, but, with more power comes more responsibility. And with more responsibility comes more failures and more chances to learn and grow. In Self-employed life, readers get to understand what framework is best suitable for their ventures and how to tailor it accordingly. It is a holistic guide that speaks to everyone, individually. It understands your needs and provides solutions. In the initial chapter, it sprouts up questions to you, making it the beginning of soul searching and thinking. Overall, it is a well penned book with the motive well clearly written all over it – “think like a business before you start to act like one."

Do you often dream of being a property proprietor? The Self-Employed Life has the tips, tricks, and advice you need to succeed in your self-employment. The author introduces the reader to his world by relating his experience with self-employed business owners. Shaw is engaging from the start of this informative book. He openly talks about the fantasies that people dream of in self-employment. He shuts down the myths and the lies. By talking about his experiences and facts, readers will see real-life examples of the topics he discusses. One of the best pieces of advice I found in this eye-opening book is that having your own business does not mean that you are in charge of everything. Numerous uncontrollable circumstances may cause you to take a back seat. When talking about the challenges self-employers go through Shaw shares solutions that have worked for him in the past. The methods Shaw uses are tried and tested, which is excellent as it gives his readers confidence in the advice he is presenting. The tiny snippets from the author’s life were the magic needed to make this book relatable to the ordinary reader. The author takes us into his world and tells stories of his personal growth, business relationships, and the letdowns that sometimes occur. There are plenty of lessons in the book about topics that relate to self-employment. Topics about personal development, getting out of your comfort zone, marketing, building business models, creative and critical thinking, and referrals were terrific to read. Each of the 3 parts of the book has something that will benefit a student or novice in self-employment. The Self-Employed Life is an intellectually invigorating book for readers that enjoy entrepreneurship, personal finance, and business-related content. Using the information contained in this book, readers will better understand what it means to be self-employed and what to plan for.

"The great paradox about self-employment is that we are going to gain control over our destiny, but we are entering into completely uncontrollable circumstances." "The Self Employed Life" outlines the necessity for self-employed business owners to focus on personal development and on their business strategies if they want to succeed. The "Self Employed Ecosystem" that will guarantee their success is divided into three parts: - Personal development: Remove limited thinking and establish forward-thinking mindsets - Business strategies: Marketing, business model, systems and other key tools for growing your business - Daily habits: Efficient and effective habits to even out the ups and downs of being self-employed I've already used "self-employed" seven times in this review, but for a reason: Jeffrey Shaw lists commonly used terms self-employed persons use to describe themselves (entrepreneur, small business, solopreneur, freelancer) and explain why none of them is quite right. If I had to pick one takeaway from this book, which resonates with me and I think everyone should know, is the following: PRICE IS ARBITRARY. "Almost all objections to price in business is just that you haven't helped your customer see how the value or benefit to them is greater than the cost." PS: If you wonder "Why this blue cover?", Jeffrey Shaw explains: "aquamarine represents exhilaration and calmness, which is the perfect state of mind for success." Self-employment is a whole-person experience. On the outside I may be doing laundry, or watching a football game on TV, but I am also thinking about my to-do list, composing an email in my head, or planning my next service offering. At the same time, I bring my whole self to my work - my health, my experience as a caretaker/sister, my personal growth journey. My finances may be separate on paper but the truth is that I can't pay personal bills if I don't bring money into the business. It all goes together. I am one person. Cathy Allen, The Board Doctor. No wonder I am so tense! The Self-Employed Life puts work and life together, and provides a path for putting me all together. It's the best book on business success I have ever read. (Which I didn't really expect, by the way. I read it so I could attend a self-employment conference for free.) I highly recommend this for anyone - rookie or veteran - who works for himself or herself. It feels good to be seen.

As an ADD writer, daily habits are my hobgoblin. That's an area of life I have to focus on constantly - and consistently - to make things happen. And if not daily, then regularly. The point is that there are some things that you have to do again and again to make your business model work. He talks a lot about this in his Small Business Ecosystem model, and its a good way to evaluate your current operation. Further, he talks a lot about personal growth. Large corporations may talk about personal development, but many of them actually fail pretty badly at the delivery. Small businesses, and especially business owners, tend to fail as well because we're too busy being busy. Shaw notes: a business will only rise to the level of the development of its leader.

What struck me most about this manual was the pragmatism with which he analyses every aspect of an entrepreneur's life: from dealing with customers to designing a website, Shaw explains in detail everything you need to do to become a businessman! More than a book to read in the evening, this is a guide to consult when needed!

This was a good book with actionable advice that sometimes touches on the "life coach, bizdev, woo woo" that is so prevalent in the genre. I think the reason I respect this book a little bit more is the fact that the author speaks about the challenges he had growing his photography business and equated the business-specific lessons to that business in a really unique way. I say unique on purpose because that type of thing is so rare in this genre. When a book is written by an author who has actually built and maintained a business themselves before writing said book, it is a little bit more reputable. I especially liked the actionable advice provided on a variety of topics from marketing to niching down.

I finished reading Jeffrey Shaw’s book The Self-Employed Life last night. My husband has been a self-employed renovation contractor for 14 years so I’m well versed in the challenges. Jeffrey captures the mindset, the positives along with the loneliness - some great tips and suggestions. Love the what’s going right journal idea in particular. The story near the end about almost bowing out of the TED Talk was really cool. The universe kept sending him messages to do it despite getting cold feet. The talk was so successful it ended up on the main TED website - a rare accomplishment. Looking forward to listening to the TED talk and the podcast - always great to find an author who is bingeable:)

Read this book recently and I thoroughly enjoyed it! As I have part time hustles as many people do, this book shows how I can develop my business and personal life so that I become successful in both. Life can be stressful but we can thrive if we just implement the right strategies. Check out Jeffrey Shaw's book if you are self employed or want to be! So many great thoughts!
