    Reading is my Escape

In the second book of the Weird School graphic novel series, the evil president of the board of education, Dr. Carbles creates a challenge for the students of Ella Mentry that he thinks they cannot possibly complete - if they read 5,000 books, they win a trip to Dizzyland. The kids are determined to succeed. But can they read that many books? And if they succeed, what possible trouble might they encounter in a theme park with rides like the Vomit Comet? While not entirely my cup of tea, I think this will be great entertainment for kids who already like the My Weird School series of short chapter books. My only quibble is that a couple of the running gags didn't convert into graphic form very well, like the one-note "I'm scared" commentary from one of the girls. The core of the story is the ongoing battle between the principal at the school and the head of the school district, who have hated each other since infancy. My only quibble is that a couple of the running gags didn't convert into graphic form very well, like the one-note "I'm scared" commentary from one of the girls. The core of the story is the ongoing battle between the principal at the school and the head of the school district, who have hated each other since infancy. The result of this is setting the 3rd grade class a difficult challenge, but with a potential reward so cool that everyone other than the two officials just knows they're going to achieve it. The parody of Disneyland is very odd, but there are some wonderful bits of humor there, especially the liability waiver for entering Dizzyland, which has some oddly specific things covered. If you read the book, make sure to read that page in detail and think about those for a moment...and never sign a similar waiver. The graphic format worked against some of the scenes, such as one in which one of the kids causes a truly catastrophic accident which is never actually dealt with. On the other hand, the brief visit to the Hall of Vice Presidents caused me to actually look up the one I didn't recognize, so that was really interesting.
