The characters recognized in world history were Suleiman, Shah of the Ottoman Empire, and Hurrem, his wife. The action takes place in Istanbul, Turkey. The Ottoman Empire was the greatest Empire in the world at the time of this telling. The Shah kept a harem of beautiful women of whom he could bed at his pleasure. The purpose of the harem was to ensure that sons would be born to inherent the throne. The women of the harem were forbidden to bed anyone bim was to haveut the Shah. Then Suleiman met Hummen of the harem and fell deeply in love with her. She was a beauty to behold but rotten to the core. Her aim was to have one of her sons named Shah upon Suleiman's death even thougho his oldest son begotten by another harem woman had already given him a son. To that end, Hummen played a part that Suleiman would neither see nor accept. Different historians have different takes about Suleiman and Hummen, but history does support the same or similar facts that this author has chosen. There are other subplots in the book that further the intrigue. Pay close attention to Abbas and Julia. I read a poorly edited copy of the book, but the errors did not affect the reading flow. This author amazes me. How is it that he can write the words that a man would typically use and turn around and write words that are utterly feminine? Could it be that he charms women and gets into their heads? Thank you. Mr. Falconer, for a good read! Personal Note: I had major, emergency surgery in 2014. I read this book at the same time. I write this so that I will not forget when these things happened.
