Her husband of only one year mysteriously and tragically dies, leaving Peggy baffled, with more questions than answers. Through seeking to understand what her husband was going through that may have led to his death, she sets out on a journey of self-discovery, aided by his memory. Following the signs she is certain are leading her each step of the way, she meets the one dog that would change her life forever. Hurricane Katrina survivor, Desiree, becomes more than Peggy's rescued dog. She awakens something in Peggy that carries her through the loss of her husband and stepping into a new life. Through Desiree's living example, past and present, Peggy develops a more trusting nature and bravely opens up to the many possibilities in life. The author sets a parallel to her growth and healing with that of Desiree's. At the start of each chapter she shares a personal letter to her beloved pet and companion. Through these loving words, the author shares her sojourn of the heart and soul, inspired by Desiree. I highly recommend this book to dog lovers and to those who have experienced loss and are struggling to find their place in the world. With courage and humility, Ms. Race shows the way to becoming one's best self in what seems like an unjust world.

While I might not agree with all the thoughts and/or decisions made by the author, I have to say that this book pulled my heartstrings. Heartfelt and open, author's story of her life and the canine family who was a big part of her life, with which the personal growth is palpable. Engaging, easy to read book for people who loves animals, especially dogs! Desiree is also a survivor of trauma, which has left its scars on both the author and the dog. The shelter has strict criteria for adoption, and Ms. Race grapples with the well-meaning bureaucracy to adopt her “heart dog.” The unconditional love that grows between the author and Desiree is healing for both human and dog. The story is told in a way the reader can relate to Ms. Race’s journey. Her tenacity to move forward in her life and improve the lives of the animals despite roadblocks and self-doubt, makes this a memorable read.

Meh I love dogs and they are a huge part of my life. This book sounded exciting and I was really anticipating reading it. It does feature some dogs and discusses issues common to rescue dogs and becoming a dog parent. But so much of the book was over-the-top with things I cannot deal with. One of the main ones was numerology and how it 'affected' everything in the author's life to where she consulted the numbers to verify her future plans. She seemed to be constantly looking for 'signs' as to what she should do. Attributing hidden meanings to mundane or normal things; equating picking up trash in NOLA on the anniversary of Hurricane Katrina with removing the 'trash' from her past. While this woman had great successes in her life and put herself out there to learn things and get professional help when she needed it, that all just got a throwaway line and the real discussion went to how the cosmos meant for her to have this or do that. It seems that in the author's mind, real meaning lies much deeper than what you see and feel and one must search for 'the real meaning'. I had to fight to finish this book. I was disappointed in what I read. It is more a book of poetry or mysticism than a memoir. I received this ARC book for free from Net Galley and this is my honest review.

This is a very well-written, nicely put together memoir that was very engaging and relatable. I would recommend this book to all readers. You can also read this review on thereadingbud.com

We hear a lot about the dog, Dakota, who is older than Desiree. There is quite a lot of grief as Dakota gets sicker. Peggy talks about her work getting involved with educating people about puppy mills. Some chapters begin with eloquently written love letters from Peggy to her dog, Desiree. We hear about how she finds and adopts her next rescue dog, Deputy. Finally there is the goodbye This book is a very nice memoir of a rescue dog named Desiree.
