He wanted to take her in, but has a baby of his own and health issues. When he asked his congregation, a couple stepped up...but they weren't of one accord. There were fertility issues, and the man only allowed his wife to care for the child until such time as she would get pregnant with his son. The woman died before that ever happened. The foster father made her a slave and whipped her often. Her only help was the pastor's wife (who married another pastor after her husband died) and daughter, who was best friends with Annie. Protagonist no. 2 is a young horse rancher, Will, who went panning for gold, when the local Native Americans got upset by so many seeking riches. When he lost all his gold panning equipment in a raid, he left and traveleed the war torn South, helping people, black and white, all of whom had lost everything and most of whom hadn't owned slaves or were ex-slaves, and some of whom tried to work enough plantation land to make ends meet. When he got tired of that, he took the horse someone had given him in thanks for all he did, and headed home. Why all the wandering? His heart had been broken when a slick talking man who pretended friendship with the family seduced the man's wife - our protagonist's mother, who claimed she had been forced by her father to marry their father, thus excusing her bad behavior in running away with another man and taking her younger son with her. This had caused no end of gossip in town and had put the older son, our 2nd protagonist, straight into the bullies' crosshairs. He left home miserable. He returns to a father who has forgiven his wife and friend, and insists his older son do the same, not for the man's sake or his mother's sake, but for his own sake, his own oeace of mind. His father is dying of cancer. He spends all his spare time with his dad, who tells him to find and marry a good Christisn woman. He is determined he will not marry anyone from the town but will seek a mail order bride, and immmediately puts in an ad. That ad is seen by Judy, Annie's friend, who encourages her to write when she comes to visit for Annie's birthday. Judy acts as the go between so Annie's foster father won't know, and after a brief correspondence, Will sends the money for train and stagecoach tickets and food at the stage stops, which Judy uses to buy her tickets, handing her the rest of the money and the instructions. In this way, because Judy bought the tickets and made out like it was she who was going west, for a while longer Annie's foster father will be unable to find him, if he even bothers to look. The trip was arduous, and Annie, like most passengers on trains and stages, was dirty and worn out when she arrived to find a taciturn man who insisted on marrying her that day because, he advised, tongues would wag if he didn't, to her detriment more than that of others. So without even a chance to wash her face, she is hurried through a ceremony by the local circuit rider, and taken to her new home. The book then settles in to their relationship, her faith, his adventure books that he writes as a hobby, his missing brother, his mother's rejection of him and his dad and taking his little brother but not him, plus Annie's gradual blooming when she realizes she won't be hurt physically, nor in any other way. As they navigate their marriage of convenience, and the things that happen around them, their few church meetings because of circuit-riding pastors being at each stop dor only a few days every 6 - 8 weeks, the blessing the housekeeper is to all if them (esp. Annie), some surprise visits, some discoveries, and more. Excellent story all around and well written. There are a few minor mistakes, nothing that would stall an English geek like me, so that's good, as some small errors often escape today's proofreaders. Her handling of the abuse the main character, and later another 2 people, suffered, is spot on with my nursing experience with abused patients, showing she knows her subject well. Her handling of the subject is very well done. I am hoping to find a book is out there where the author turns her spotlight to Nathan. I'd love to see his story continued.
