Since meeting Kieran, my first, second, and admittedly third impressions of him have changed radically. Not surprising, since he was a prize D during at least two of those encounters. What I should be doing is running from the college basketball star who checks so many of my dream-guy boxes. But do you know how hard it is to find a hot guy who’s as smart as he is talented? And I’m not just talking about his talent on the basketball court. Heck no. It’s easy to get distracted by him, because of him, yet as far as he’s concerned, I’m the one who’s a distraction and throwing his carefully constructed plans out of whack. I should be sorry. I should also be better at guarding my heart. But Kieran Kendall is under my skin, and getting him to break his rules is far too much fun. Rules, Schmules! is an 82k stand-alone MM romance featuring characters first introduced in No Take Backs. It contains ridiculous antics by college basketball players, a basketball mascot who likes to twerk, and lots of sweet and sexy times.

This was … a book I read that I have no real feelings about one way or the other. I didn’t think Dean was as snarky as the book seems to think he is, and Kieran was sort of blah. I’ve read this author before. This is a MM contemporary story set in college in the USA about the basketball world. Main characters are Dean an out and proud gay man who loves his family and has recently moved across country with this Mum and brother for a new start. Kieran is the captain of the college basketball team hoping for pro selection when his graduates, because of this he has many rules. The chemistry with Dean makes Kieran shake his rules and hence the title of the book. I really enjo I’ve read this author before. Dean is focused on completing his college degree and being there for his mom and younger brother Zeke as much as he can, which means moving across the country to start his junior year of college. Kieran Kendall is the captain of the Brixham Bears basketball team and has a bunch of rules for succeeding in college and making it to the NBA draft without being outed. He’s a talented basketball player and a born leader, but he’s decided to stay mostly in the closet (only out to his family, friends and teammates) so that he doesn’t make waves when he goes pro. Kieran finds himself trying to hold on to his rules while also trying to figure out how to hold on to his newfound happiness. Dean and Kieran meet at a party and then get stuck working together for a group project and things start to get interesting from there. I think Dean and Kieran had a really cute connection that neither of them were expecting to go anywhere. Even though they weren’t looking for anything serious, Kieran abandons his rules and Dean puts down his walls to see where things go in earnest. But, I found this book really hard to get into. It took me much longer to get into the story than I expected and still found myself checking to see how much of it I had left frequently. Their chemistry definitely wasn’t in question but I didn’t feel as invested in their story as I hoped. This book introduced us to a fun cast of characters, so I’m looking forward to seeing where book 2 will take us next!

It took me a little bit to get into the story but once I did I really enjoyed it. Kieran and Dean really tried to deny their feelings but were able to find ways to make everything work. I was glad that Kieran was able to feel safe enough to come out and how they happened to gain some friends in professional sports to help them.

I loved reading this first book in a spin off series from Becca Seymour. It's a lot of fun, hot in all the right places and some great characters. There's no denying the attraction and chemistry that they share but the problem being Kieran may be out to his teammates but no one else, with no plans as he's aiming to enter the draft. Kieran cannot stay away from the firecracker that is Dean, though and one too many meetups has them finally giving in, over and over again. I love how things develop between these two. There's a slight animosity at first and then hesitation, to protect themselves of what could possibly be and then go wrong, but they are so right for each other! Their spark, once ignited, there's no stopping it even as they are breaking every one of Kieran's rules. Something I really enjoyed about their POV styles is that in some moments, they are talking to the reader, mocking themselves and the situation they find themselves in. I felt for Kieran and the things he struggled with and Dean handles everything so well, with poise and his brilliant personality depending on a positive or negative situation. How it all comes together ties in a little with Becca's previous series, Zone Defense. Kieran's teammates/closest friends can all see it and they welcome him with open arms. There's wonderful friendships there, showing a great amount of support and trust. Both men's families are so loving and welcoming, I'm especially in love with Grams. Definitely a recommended read! I really enjoyed all aspects of this story and look forward to the next in the series! I received an ARC and am happily giving a review.

But when he met Dean, he can't help but break them no matter what. There is no denying the chemistry between Dean and Kieran. I think their connection's rather cute and I did like their banter and interactions. The dual point of view helped in better understanding their thoughts and made their personalities distinct. It was wonderful to see their relationship develop from friendship to something more. The story also introduced a number of endearing characters and I am grateful to see such supportive people around the main characters - loving them and being there when they need all the help they can get. Rules, Schmules is a light, funny, low angst story with opposites attract, hidden relationships and some steamy scenes. I do recommend giving this book a try. This would be 3.5 stars out of 5 stars for me. I received an ARC of this book from GRR and I have chosen to publish my fair and honest review.

Good start to a new series! Rules, Schmules is a romance with a basketball theme; I don’t think I’ve read many, if any, basketball books before so this one was interesting just for that alone. Add to that it was a good story with great writing. There’s just the right amount of wit and drama. Kieran’s dilemma about coming out to everyone is that he wants a career in professional basketball and he feels that he won’t be accepted as an out gay athlete. He’s also afraid of what it might mean for Dean to be in the public eye. I thought the characters were interesting and I really loved how supportive Kieran’s family is. His grandmother was especially likeable. I enjoyed the cast of secondary characters as well and I’m looking forward to reading the next book in this series. The epilogue, set a few years into the future, was very nice. I love getting to see what characters are up to a little while after they get their HEA. Kieran and Dean are two characters that immediately captured my heart and refused to leave. Kieran is a superb college basketball player who also happens to be smart, witty and super sweet whilst Dean is a mascara wearing twink with plenty of sass who can stand up for himself just by using his words. Circumstances bring them together and let’s just say that they do not immediately hit it off, although there is a bit of unacknowledged interest between them. It takes these two loveable characters spending more time together before the chemistry starts to fizz. Of course some self imposed “rules” come into play and it’s not long before they get a little bit bent and a little bit broken! Kieran and Dean’s relationship is not without some bumps and bruises along the way but not anything that can stop their love for each other or their life together. Becca Seymour has gifted us with another beautifully written engaging and enjoyable read that had me hooked from the very start. These two compelling characters made my heart happy and tugged at it too, they made me giggle and most importantly they left me smiling. This is a brilliant start to the Fast Break series and I’m eagerly anticipating which of the interesting side characters is up next!

Can Dean get Kiernan to forget about his rules? You'll have to read this book to find out. You'll love thier journey as they figure things out. You'll laugh out loud. Your heart will ache. Becca Seymour is one of those authors that I always want to check out but haven't had the time in my TBR to reach until just now. In fact, I'm pretty sure I have several books of hers on my kindle and I'm fighting the urge to dive headfirst into them (and her entire backlist) after reading this one. Rules Schmules is the hilarious and heartwarming love story of Kiernan and Dean. Kiernan is a mostly closeted college basketball star - I say mostly because his friends and family know but he has no intentions of letting the world at large know. He wants to go into the League (think NBA but without the Copyright fee) after he finishes university and he knows that the world of sports can be pretty homophobic. Dean, on the other hand, is an out and proud gay man, a self-identified twink, and so full of confidence and backbone that even the big basketball stars in this book cower at his glare. In other words, perfect opposites. Perfect opposites that get off to a terrible start when one of Kiernan's friends spill a drink on Dean at a party. Dean bares his teeth - verbally - and Kiernan is completely and utterly enamored. But he has his rules that he lives by - rules that dictate everything for him in order to get him into the League - and Dean is in direct violation of basically every single one. So of course, because this is book world, they get assigned a group project and have to get to know one another. Which leads fairly quickly to hooking up. This book spans the course of a year, chronicling the highs and lows of their relationship - from friendship to more - and its wonderful. There are quite a few time jumps in it, but it doesn't feel like there's anything important being glossed over or like anything is being particularly rushed. Instead, it gives the book a certain flash of realism, because the timeline makes so much sense to the decisions being made. Not only are Dean and Kiernan amazing characters with amazing chemistry, Seymour introduces a host of hilarious side characters. The one that stands out the most is Tyron, Kiernan's roommate and best friend who is fiercely protective and probably a little annoying to his friends. I personally found him absolutely amazing in every way and hope that we get to see him more in this series, even if he doesn't get a book of his own... but honestly, fingers crossed that he gets a book of his own. The rest of Kiernan's roommates play a good part in the story, but none of them are quite as memorable as Ty, though Sammy comes close with his dangerous alcohol concoctions. Combined though, they give a cute found family and unconditional love and friendship vibe to the story that makes me absolutely weak. Rules, Schmules is a dual POV 1st person narrative story with good heat and moderately low angst. It had me laughing out loud at multiple times and has me itching to read more of Becca Seymour's work. So all in all, a strong book that I would highly recommend. Also side note: distinct character voices can be really hard in first person, but Becca Seymour really mastered it here. I could definitely tell the POV switches, even if I didn't see the name at the beginning of each chapter. ** DISCLAIMER: I recieved an ARC of this book from GRR and this is my fair and honest review. **

I enjoyed the storyline and the writing and look forward to more Becca Seymour in the future. The star of this book was definitely Dean. He was a ball a sassy fun. He's this petite, mascara wearing, take no shit twink who makes his worth known. I loved his attitude and also loved how he wasn't shy in any way and spoke his mind whenever he needed to. He has a close relationship with his mother and younger brother that was sweet and added just enough love from the family side characters. He has transferred to a different school so he can help support his family and help his mother who is a nurse and works third shift. He is there for them always. He doesn't take himself too seriously but won't be pushed around by anyone, especially jocks. One night at a party Dean is just minding his own fabulous business but has an unpleasant run in with a hoard of big, loud basketball players and tells them how it is in the most forward way possible, "Wait your turn or I'll cut your hands off", basically. HAHA like I said, sass! And this is where and when he meets the ridiculously tall and ridiculously handsome and ridiculously not rude at all jock, Kieran. Kieran was oh so sweet. He is a big softie and a big bottom. This is definitely not the norm in MM romance so it took me a few to get used. Kieran is out with his friends and family but not to the school and he wants to keep it that way. I understand this in MM romance as well but it does make me sad to see. I wish all gay couple's could love out loud as it makes it more enjoyable to read and be a part of their relationship. His reasoning for keeping his sexuality quiet is career driven and for the most part does not stop him from being happy. He really is so easy going and someone you just want to be friends with. He thinks he's liked by everyone until he meets Dean and he realizes that's not always true. All he wants to do is win this guy over now and his cuddly sweet self is pretty hard to resist. He also wants to get horizontal with Dean which does pose a problem when he finds himself wanting to talk to Dean and be around Dean even if it seems like the worst idea he's ever had. For the most part I enjoyed Dean and Kieran's relationship. The beginning was very promising in the heat department but definitely fizzled out more than I was expecting. their first encounter was hawt and some following but then the middle and most of the end were quieter and softer moments. There were WAY too many fade to black's for my liking which surprised me. I was glad to see their dynamic didn't change and they stayed true to who they were as characters. I really enjoyed their HFN though as they do make a believable couple. I thought the side characters were good and added depth to the story. The one guy I wasn't a huge fan of was was Tyron but he did eventually redeem himself. I loved both the hero's families and how they were incorporated into the story. However, I don't know if I am entirely sold on continuing the series. I think it will depend on who the MC's are. I do like the play on words for the titles, very creative. My fair rating: 3.75 rounded to 4

Dean promised himself to never commit to a secret relationship again, here he is, it’s hard to resist Kieran. After the first struggle Dean is accepted by the teammates. The banter is hilarious at times. Dean knows in his heart Kieran isn’t for a long goal, just for the summer, and he will never force him to come out, still, it’s a pity because they fit so perfectly. Watching Kieran and Dean spend a lot of time together and getting close was absolutely thrilling. It was right in all the ways. Even though at first sight I thought Kieran was on the edge of being an asshole or a sweet cinnamon roll. It was already early clear he so very much the latter. What a delightful story, such a pleasurable read. It has a great flow, great banter, fun, hot sexy moments, no stress, and a lot of great time. There are original turns and endearing moments. Kieran and Dean personalities were enough developed, they were fun together, their sexy encounters were so hot! The supportive family and crazy fun teammates were a great addition, this all together made it a more than wonderful narrative with not one dull moment! The author has a joyous way of writing, it was a delight to read this story! Read and reviewed for LoveBytes - LGBTQ bookreviews

Dean is also out and proud. He is also a little snarky towards Kieran when they first meet and beyond. Kieran is not yet out. Whilst his team-mates know about his sexuality, being openly gay and playing sports is still very rare. Those professional stars who are openly gay receive a lot of abuse, making him hesitant to be open about his sexuality. For both Kieran and Dean, family is important - Kieran includes his basketball family in this. When they are forced to work together on a project, the intensity and chemistry between changes from snark and dislike to the complete opposite. In fairness it wasn't a huge jump in feelings for either. What was great about Dean was that he was completely supportive towards Kieran and his journey around his sexuality and no pressure about coming out publicly. They support each other always. Whilst Kieran is not publicly out, he integrates himself fully into Dean's life, showing his commitment to the young man who is a constant at his side. Becca Seymour always manages to write unique MM reads that bring incredible characters with very different stories and journeys, not afraid to tackle the difficult stories. This one was no exception, especially with the small number of publicly gay professional sports stars there are. It shouldn't be a big thing to be gay and play professional sports. It shouldn't be considered an issue and it certainly shouldn't result in the negative feedback that they receive that tips into abuse. ***Reviewed for LBM Book Blog***

Kieran and Dean's story is full of banter and fun college times. I love Kieran and Dean together since they are opposite but fit well together. The banter between the teammates, friends, and each other made for some good laughs. This was my first book by Becca Seymour and it will not be my last. I look forward to binge-reading her backlist while waiting to see what comes next. Rules, Schmules! contains... mm, college, frenemies-to-lovers, sports (basketball), dual first-person point of view. 4.5 Maple Leaf Review *advanced copy kindly provided and honestly reviewed on behalf of Canadian Girl Book Blog* Follow → Facebook ❤️ Instagram 🖤 Twitter ❤️ TikTok 🖤 Blog

This author is one of my go-tos for sweet romance, and never disappoints. I enjoyed Kieran and Dean’s opposites attract sweet romance story. I enjoyed the literary discussion and part of the story too, and can relate to Kieran’s view of the Bard. Dean is wonderful, especially his sass and snark, and I loved reading about his and Kieran’s first rocky encounter, then them becoming reluctant study partners and slowly so much more. The progression of their relationship and their realisation of how much they mean to each other felt realistic. Their scenes together are sweet and sexy. The way Kieran’s rules end up way more than bent is fun, especially with that reflected in the chapter headings. The antics of a certain bear mascot are a lot of fun. Dean’s relationship with his brother and mother is strong and heartfelt. I love their easy acceptance of each other, and the way they support each other. I liked Kieran’s family too but especially his grams. She’s a force to be reckoned with, and has a heart of gold. The friendship and family vibe between the team is wonderful. I loved their almost sibling vibe, and I hope they all get their own HEAs. I love how Kieran is supported by couples in the wider sports world, and I need to play catch up and read their stories now. The epilogue is perfect, and I loved Kieran and Dean’s HEA.

Rules Schmules is Book One in Fast Break Series and is an m/m College sports romance. Can be read as a standalone. College Basketball Player Kieran has a set of rules! And boy are they some rules!! He just wants to go pro at the end of college with no distractions and certainly doesn’t want him being gay to overshadow him as a ball player. But however rules are always made to be broken…… right!! 😉 Dean is funny, sassy as hell!, loves basketball, but equally has had bad experiences. And the first impression between Kieran and Dean at a party were not that great. Kieran is desperate to stay in the closet ( but he is out to family and close friends/ teammates) and stick to his rules. But then again he had never met anyone quite like Dean before either. I absolutely adored these two. They both progress so well. There are up and downs, and a lot of steamy moments too (and I mean steamy!! 😈) but the humour in the book is amazing too. I loved the chemistry these guys had, even if they didn’t really want it. Their drawn to each other and equally deserve to be happy. Whilst reading you get to hear what has happened with other sports players when they’ve come out and you can see why it would be a concern. But eventually the concern isn’t just for him anymore. This is one of the best college sports romance’s that I’ve read in quite a while and I’m so there for it. I honestly can’t get enough and would happily reread this again and again. I wish for more of Kieran & Dean and now can’t wait for book two in the series. 💯 Highly recommend.

I loved this spin off series from Becca Seymour! There are not many basketball romance books out there and even fewer still gay basketball romances so I was super excited to see spin off from the Zone Defense series but set at the college level. Kieran and Dean's cameo appearance in the first Zone Defense book was a huge turning point in that book so I was excited to see their story in more detail and depth in this book. Dean is such a fun character who lives life out loud in every way possible while Kieran is so focused on going pro that he lives a very quiet, controlled life...until he meets Dean. Seeing both Kieran and Dean struggle to redefine themselves and their goals to maintain their relationship was so sweet to see. Its not that they changed who they were fundamentally to be with the other, but I loved that they put aside goals they had made in the past to pursue new goals together as a couple. One of the things that I love about Becca Seymour books is that she always covers a large chunk of time within the book, meaning we get to really see the characters grow and advance within the story, rather than just cramming their entire relationship into a four month period. I can't wait to see how the next book in the series will be about and I hope we will get more cameos from all our favorite basketball players!

Kieran & Dean The opening line was on point for me; this was my first by this author and I wasn't disappointed. I'm looking forward to the next book in the series but man March is so flipping far away. Kieran is a college basketball star with his sights set on going pro, he's also gay. He doesn't want to be the first gay player in the league so he's set up rules to survive college with his goals in tact. He's done well for his first two years, but that is because he hadn't met Dean yet. He's done well for his first two years, but that is because he hadn't met Dean yet. Dean just moved from Cali to Georgia because his mom got a new job and he didn't want to be too far away from her or his kid brother, Zeke. Dean might be small but he is feisty and when he meets Kieran and teammate at a party he is less than impressed and he lets them both know it. Dean & Kieran are paired together to work on a class project which forces them to be in close proximity and forces them to see each other as more than their first impressions. This is the story of what happens when Kieran finally meets someone who makes him want to bend his rules and Dean finds his unicorn jock. I love Dean and his take no shit attitude and I love Kieran's quiet confidence and quiet insecurity. What I really love however is the friendships between the team which is making me want the next book now rather than later.

This is a great start to a new series and I really enjoyed it. It is well written, hilarious, sweet, sexy, emotional, the characters are wonderful and I love the storyline. Dean and Kieran are complete opposites and their first meeting is less than ideal. They have nothing in common and when they are forced together for a group project they have to learn to get along. Dean is out and proud and was burned by a hidden relationship in his past so he is definitely not looking to do it again. Kieran This is a great start to a new series and I really enjoyed it. I love how supportive and accepting their friends and families are as well. The ending is perfect, I absolutely love the secondary characters and I can't wait to read the next book in this new and exciting series. I received a copy of this book from Gay Romance Reviews, and this is my honest review.

This book was such a good read. The characters of Dean and Kieran kept pulling me through the pages. Kieran is so obsessed with his rules that he has set up for himself that he treats Dean like a jerk. His hot and cold mixed signals are enough to confuse anyone. Dean has been there, done that, and isn’t really interested in doing it again. He knows his basketball despite what Kieran’s teammates think and is not willing to hide for anyone. But he would also never out anyone either. This creates a very frustrating push and pull reaction and the guys around Kieran don’t help matters any. This is a very good read. The “bros” are a bit clueless and Tyron is a himbo, but they mean well. The fear of being an out gay professional player in any sport is real and I love how Becca Seymour handled it. These two young men do a lot of growing up over the course of this book and it is well worth their HEA.
